Allen: 2020 'Has the Potential to be the Best Linebacker Group Since I Have Been Here'

Written by Sammy Jacobs (@Hoosier_Huddle)

Tom Allen has said it at every stop of his coaching career, “if you want to have a great defense, you better have great linebackers.” The good news for the Hoosiers is that they have the best depth at that position since Allen joined the IU football program in 2016.

Throwback Thursday: Indiana 26 Purdue 24

Written By Sammy Jacobs (@Hoosier_Huddle)

The Indiana Hoosiers entered the 2016 Bucket Game needing the win to get to bowl eligibility. It wasn’t pretty and if the Hoosiers were playing anyone (maybe not Rutgers) but Purdue, they wouldn’t have gotten that sixth win. The Hoosiers turned the ball over four times and averaged a paltry 3.5 yards per play. Those are awful numbers for an offense. However, the Hoosiers’ defense was up to the challenge taking the ball away from Purdue three times and holding the Boilers to just 42 yards on the ground. While it was far from pretty the Hoosiers did claim their fourth Bucket Game victory in a row and clinched their second bowl berth in as many years in what would become Kevin Wilson's final game in Bloomington.

Throwback Thursday: Michigan 20 Indiana 10

In week 12 the Hoosiers headed up to the Big House to take on the Wolverines. While Indiana fell yet again to Michigan they proved they belonged on the same field. It was a cool scene late in the game when the snow really started coming down under the lights, but the weather certainly didn’t help the Hoosiers in this one. The wind clearly affected both the passing game and the kicking game and unfortunately for the Hoosiers, they couldn’t do enough other things to pull off an upset.

The second part of our double-header on this Throwback Thursday looks back at Indiana’s sloppy 33-27 win over Rutgers. Indiana had four turnovers, botched several field goals and extra points and probably should have won this game by 20 or more points. While the overall quality of play was disappointing the Hoosiers netted their fifth win of 2016 and climbed over the .500-mark in November.

Throwback Thursday: Indiana 30 Ball State 20

Throwback Thursday: Indiana 30 Ball State 20

On this Throwback Thursday we take a look back at IU's 30-20 win over Ball State. The Hoosiers raced out to a 30-3 lead after three quarters, then held on as the Cardinals scored 17 points in the fourth. IU's offense went into a shell, due to the fact Dan Feeney missed the majority of the game after suffering a concussion. In our new box score there are several facets of the game that kept Ball State alive. First, Ball State's offense did manage to have nine explosion plays (runs over 10 yards or passes over 15 yards) to IU's 10. Secondly, the Hoosiers were dreadful on third down going two-of-12 while facing an average distance over nine yards. Finally, the Cardinals sacked Richard Lagow four times, which helped set up those third and longs. IU took the win, but it came at a high price as Feeney would miss about four games and Simmie Cobbs was done for the year after one play.

2017 Spring Practice Preview: Linebackers

2017 Spring Practice Preview: Linebackers

Written by: TJ Inman (@TJHoosierHuddle)

Hoosier Huddle is getting ready for the first spring practice of the Tom Allen era by previewing each position. Today’s focus is on a position headlined by a returning All-American. Arguably the best player on the squad, Tegray Scales will lead this defense from the middle. He’s surrounded by a group of players hungry to step up and replace the production of the departed Marcus Oliver.

IU drastically improved in their first year under defensive coordinator Tom Allen. Allen is now the head coach and the Hoosiers return the majority of their 2016 defensive production. For the first time in a very long time, there are legitimate expectations surrounding IU’s defense. The play of All-American Tegray Scales is a big reason why. The other linebackers will have a fierce battle throughout spring practice to begin determining who will play beside the senior leader.

Written By David Sugarman

The nature of the beast that is the carousel of college football players coming and going started spinning at full speed this past Friday when running back Devine Redding and linebacker Marcus Oliver declared for the upcoming NFL Draft. For a team with a mostly new coaching staff, it’s helpful to lean on the veterans who have made an impact on the program and the Hoosiers just lost two big ones. As the college football season gets ready to come to a close tonight, we take a look at what these losses mean for the program as the Hoosiers head into the offseason.
