Five Items the Hoosiers Need to Check-Off Their Spring Practice To-Do List

Written by Sammy Jacobs (@Hoosier_Huddle)

The Indiana Hoosiers will open up their spring football practice session on March 7th, 2020 and conclude it with their annual Cream and Crimson Game on Friday April 17th, 2020 at 7pm in Memorial Stadium. Spring practice is a time of growth and development for the players who have been around the program as last year’s seniors have moved on and next year’s freshmen (outside of the nine early enrollees) haven’t arrived yet. While it may not drum up a ton of excitement, there are things that Indiana football has to do over the next two months to help ensure the 2020 season is a successful one, here they are:

Coy Cronk Still Finding Ways to Help Hoosiers Win

It has been seven long weeks since Indiana’s offensive line has seen Coy Cronk assume position to the left of the quarterback. With his season-ending ankle injury suffered in week four, he’s taken on his chosen role as team captain, assistant offensive line coach, and traveling cheerleader— a contributor to the Hoosiers’ success from the sidelines, making his team a priority by choice.

Countdown to 2018 IUFB Kickoff: 68 Days (Hunter Littlejohn)

Hunter Littlejohn (Redshirt junior)

-Height: 6’3”

-Weight: 305 pounds

-Hometown: Powell, Ohio

-Position: Offensive Line

Hunter Littlejohn was built for Big Ten football at 6-foot-3, 305-pounds. The Ohio native was a three-star recruit from Olentangy Liberty High School just north of Columbus. Littlejohn, rated by 247 Sports as one of the 50 best players in Ohio, chose Bloomington as his home. He redshirted his freshman year. Littlejohn made the most of his redshirt 2015 season by packing on the pounds – he increased his playing weight by nearly 40 pounds.

After earning scout team honors during the last week of his freshman season, Littlejohn played an emergency role in 2016. As a redshirt sophomore, he saw action in one game. Littlejohn’s focus in the classroom never wavered as he earned Academic All-Big Ten honors.

Littlejohn won the job as starting center after a hard-fought battle throughout spring and summer. He started all 12 games at center for the Hoosiers. Littlejohn help command an IU offense that finished third in the Big Ten and 35th nationally in passing offense. Littlejohn was again an Academic All Big-Ten selection and he was IU’s offensive player of the week against Rutgers.

Littlejohn and the rest of the Indiana offensive lineman will need to step it up in 2018. The offensive line last season provided quarterbacks Peyton Ramsey and Richard Lagow with ample time to throw, but the Hoosiers rushing attach left something to be desired. With a seemingly strong stable of running backs, the IU O-line will have their chance to propel the Hoosier offense toward success next season. Hunter Littlejohn and his fellow linemen bring back a lot of experience. Hopefully for the Hoosiers, it pays off on the field.

Five Things to Pay Attention to as Indiana Starts Spring Football Practice on Saturday

Five Things to Pay Attention to as Indiana Starts Spring Football Practice on Saturday

Football is returning to Bloomington.

Indiana kicks off its spring practice on Saturday, as it prepares for the 2018 season following a 5-7 (2-7) campaign last fall, coming just one win shy of a third consecutive bowl appearance.

The Hoosiers lose a plethora of talent from its 2017 squad, primarily on the defensive side of the football. As head coach Tom Allen enters his second spring practice, he'll be coaching an IU team with a little more youth and inexperience than he's had in two seasons (one as defensive coordinator) with the program.

With offseason football right around the corner for the Hoosiers, here are five things to watch heading into spring practice.

Spring Practice 2018 Position Battle: Offensive Line

Spring Practice 2018 Position Battle: Offensive Line

Written By Alex Compton (@alexncompton)

This is one of the most interesting position groups on the team. There are some anchors that have been through the ringer so far in their careers, coupled with some unknowns. That type of combination can be worrisome, or exciting, depending on how you look at the situation. IU isn’t losing much personnel wise for 2018, so the battles for starting spot this year will be very, very interesting. Certain spots on the line (cough, cough, left side) are already locked down, so essentially it’s a three spot position battle for this upcoming season. Second year offensive line coach Darren Hiller has some options to work with, and Coach Allen’s philosophy of having a multitude of bodies up front to rotate in is starting to take shape.

Week Four Match-up to Watch: Georgia Southern's Front Seven vs. Right Side of IU's Offensive Line

Week Four Match-up to Watch: Georgia Southern's Front Seven vs. Right Side of IU's Offensive Line

Written By Alex Compton (@Alexncompton)

IU took care of business in week two. It was far from pretty in the first fifteen minutes, but eventually the offense put some points on the board and helped out a defense that flexed their muscles for the entire game. My matchup of Crawford and Fields did a solid job of keeping the UVA receivers in front of them for the most part, and it really showed that the Hoos just couldn’t create enough positive yardage consistently to put pressure on IU. After waiting forever for the season to start, it seems like four months have passed between the game in Virginia and now. IU will look to win consecutive games for the first time in the Tom Allen era come Saturday, and the matchup to watch will play a big part in trying to do that.
