COUNTDOWN TO KICKOFF: #47 MICAH MCFADDEN

Height: 6’2”

Weight: 230 pounds

Hometown: Tampa, Florida (Plant)

Year: Sophomore

Position: LB

Only six more Indiana football-less Saturdays remain until the season kicks off against the Ball State Cardinals at Lucas Oil Stadium. The August 31st noon matchup is 47 days away, so today we will feature the guy representing the Hoosiers’ No. 47 jersey— none other than Micah McFadden.

Even a season of nameless jerseys did not make a difference when it comes to recognizing sophomore linebacker Micah McFadden. A true freshman, the Florida native played in all 12 games in the 2018 season. His stat line for last season read 20 tackles, 14 solo, with one for loss, a single forced fumble, and a pair of quarterback hurries.

As far as his performance in the off-season, no news was confirmed good news in the press conference before the spring game: “I haven’t mentioned him in a little bit, but the growth from last fall to right now is pretty intense in a good way,” Coach Tom Allen said.

With big shoes to fill with the departure of Dameon Willis, McFadden has proven himself a top contestant, along with former high school teammate and redshirt sophomore Thomas Allen and redshirt freshman James Miller.

Veteran Lineback Dameon Willis Jr. is Returning for his Fifth Season

Written by: TJ Inman (@TJHoosierHuddle)

Dameon Willis’ career at IU was complete. The redshirt junior had opted to go through Senior Day festivities during IU’s final home game and the Hoosiers season had concluded with a loss to the Purdue Boilermakers. Spring football came and went and Willis was not on the roster. However, with his final season of eligibility intact, Dameon Willis is back and ready to bolster a linebacker group that can definitely use a veteran presence. Indiana University head coach Tom Allen announced that Willis would be with the Hoosiers for his senior season at the annual Huber’s Winery event on Wednesday night.

Spearheaded by an All-American, Indiana's Linebackers Should be Great Again in 2017

Spearheaded by an All-American, Indiana's Linebackers Should be Great Again in 2017

Last season was marked by the incredible defensive turnaround under then defensive coordinator Tom Allen. The switch to a 4-2-5 scheme with an aggressive mentality paid off in the biggest possible way for the Hoosiers, as they were able to see the defense climb all the way to 31st best in the nation according to S&P+. Many of the players have talked about the desire to end the year in the top 25 this season, and that is a very attainable goal. Indiana returns just over 96% of its defensive production from last season this year, and that is tops in the nation. Just about every starter is back, but one of the few holes to plug is at linebacker, the unit we will look at today.

2017 Spring Practice Preview: Linebackers

2017 Spring Practice Preview: Linebackers

Hoosier Huddle is getting ready for the first spring practice of the Tom Allen era by previewing each position. Today’s focus is on a position headlined by a returning All-American. Arguably the best player on the squad, Tegray Scales will lead this defense from the middle. He’s surrounded by a group of players hungry to step up and replace the production of the departed Marcus Oliver.

IU drastically improved in their first year under defensive coordinator Tom Allen. Allen is now the head coach and the Hoosiers return the majority of their 2016 defensive production. For the first time in a very long time, there are legitimate expectations surrounding IU’s defense. The play of All-American Tegray Scales is a big reason why. The other linebackers will have a fierce battle throughout spring practice to begin determining who will play beside the senior leader.
