Talk about your bounce back wins. Indiana had just lost to Wake Forest at home 33-28 and Michigan State hadn't lost two games in a row since 2012. This was a great win for IU despite the fact that Michigan State finished the season 3-9. The Hoosiers came back from 14-0 and overcame three missed field goals and several other golden opportunities to put the game out of reach. IU was plus-13.9 in average starting field position and had converted on over 50-percent of their third down opportunities. Overall, it was a great night in Bloomington and a win that was vital to getting to a bowl game.

Throwback Thursday: Wake Forest 33 Indiana 28

Probably the most frustrating game for Indiana in the 2016 season was this five-point loss to Wake Forest at home. The Demon Deacons would go on to make a bowl game, but this game left a bad taste in the mouths of Hoosier Nation. The most obvious reason why the Hoosiers dropped this one was the five interceptions thrown by Richard Lagow, but there were also some other factors that may have been over looked. IU was a dreadful two-for-five in the red zone leaving 21 points on the field and failed to find a consistent running game. The Hoosiers also had a field goal blocked and while the defense played pretty well, they were not good enough in stopping the run on first and second downs leading to Wake Forest converting eight of their 20 third down tries that averaged a distance of just 5.9 yards per attempt and that did include some third and very longs. Thankfully, this game did not haunt the Hoosiers like some other bad losses have in the past. IU rallied to beat Michigan State the next week and made a bowl game.

On this Throwback Thursday we take a look back at IU's 30-20 win over Ball State. The Hoosiers raced out to a 30-3 lead after three quarters, then held on as the Cardinals scored 17 points in the fourth. IU's offense went into a shell, due to the fact Dan Feeney missed the majority of the game after suffering a concussion. In our new box score there are several facets of the game that kept Ball State alive. First, Ball State's offense did manage to have nine explosion plays (runs over 10 yards or passes over 15 yards) to IU's 10. Secondly, the Hoosiers were dreadful on third down going two-of-12 while facing an average distance over nine yards. Finally, the Cardinals sacked Richard Lagow four times, which helped set up those third and longs. IU took the win, but it came at a high price as Feeney would miss about four games and Simmie Cobbs was done for the year after one play.
