They have been waiting for this moment, and it is almost here.

Six redshirt freshmen (Thomas Allen and Mo Burnam at linebacker, Juwan Burgess and Bryant Fitzgerald at defensive back, Peyton Hendershot at tight end and Caleb Jones along offensive line) will get to play in their first game as a Hoosier in less than a month, even if it is just the spring game on April 14.

Spring Practice 2018 Position Preview: Linebackers

Spring Practice 2018 Position Preview: Linebackers

Written by: TJ Inman (@TJHoosierHuddle)

After a few seasons of absolute certainty at linebacker, the Indiana Hoosiers are mostly starting over at the position. One of the best defensive players to ever play in Bloomington, Tegray Scales, will be playing on Sundays and the athletic Chris Covington will likely be joining him. The Hoosiers are not without talent but experience will be in short supply and questions abound. There’s no doubt this is one of the more intriguing positions entering the offseason.

In an effort to be completely transparent, I will let you know that I wanted to have a projection but there’s just no sense in making a wild guess based on no information. I’ll make a projection on how I believe the depth chart will look at kick off of the first game during the “position battle” article but for now, we’ll just take a look at each player in the group. There is going to be whole lot of fluidity and there are way more questions than answers at this position.

We’ll begin this preview by taking a look at the returning “veterans”. No one on the depth chart has much actual playing experience but these players have at least been through the program and know what to expect from a Big Ten schedule.

2017 Spring Practice Preview: Linebackers

2017 Spring Practice Preview: Linebackers

Written by: TJ Inman (@TJHoosierHuddle)

Hoosier Huddle is getting ready for the first spring practice of the Tom Allen era by previewing each position. Today’s focus is on a position headlined by a returning All-American. Arguably the best player on the squad, Tegray Scales will lead this defense from the middle. He’s surrounded by a group of players hungry to step up and replace the production of the departed Marcus Oliver.

IU drastically improved in their first year under defensive coordinator Tom Allen. Allen is now the head coach and the Hoosiers return the majority of their 2016 defensive production. For the first time in a very long time, there are legitimate expectations surrounding IU’s defense. The play of All-American Tegray Scales is a big reason why. The other linebackers will have a fierce battle throughout spring practice to begin determining who will play beside the senior leader.

2017 National Signing Day Profile: Mo Burnam

Mo Burnam, 6’2”, 219, Conyers, Georgia (Salem High School), ILB, 247Sports Composite Ranking: 3-star (84.38)

The Indiana Hoosiers have successfully mined the Peach State for talent that has improved their defense. They landed a couple more Georgia natives in the 2017 class in LaDamion Hunt and Mo Burnam. Burnam is an interior linebacker that is considered a three-star prospect and he chose IU after de-committing from the Tennessee Volunteers. Burnam is a highly-regarded player that appears to be a terrific fit for Tom Allen’s dual-linebacker system.
