Written By Sammy Jacobs (@Hoosier_Huddle)

Since we skipped last Thursday we are going to double-dip on the Throwback Thursdays this week. First we’ll take a look at the Hoosiers win against Maryland.

Indiana returned home to face Maryland after a disappointing trip up to Northwestern. The Hoosiers desperately needed a win to keep their bowl hopes afloat. It was a beautiful, warm Saturday afternoon and the Hoosier offense would finally show signs of life.

2017 Spring Practice Preview: Quarterbacks

Written By Sammy Jacobs (@Hoosier_Huddle)

When the 2016 season ended in heart breaking fashion at Levi’s Stadium two things where clear about the quarterback situation at Indiana. One, that sideshow wildcat Zander Diamont would not be back for the 2017 season after retiring. Two, starting quarterback Richard Lagow had left the door open for a massive quarterback competition in spring practice with his performance against Utah.

Diamont Leaves IU on His Own Terms

Diamont Leaves IU on His Own Terms

Zander Diamont doesn’t really know where his future lies. He’s not sure where his professional career will take him and he’s not sure what he’ll be doing upon graduation. However, he is sure of two things: his professional future does not lie in the NFL and he’ll need a healthy brain to be able to have the life he wants to have. For that reason, the exciting quarterback from California has opted to forego his final season of eligibility and leave the Indiana football program after the upcoming bowl game.

Hoosiers Get Creative to Trample Terrapins

Hoosiers Get Creative to Trample Terrapins

The Indiana Hoosiers knew they needed to get their rushing attack going if they were to find any success during the remainder of the season. They had failed to top four yards per carry in any conference game and the lack of a ground game was making the offense unbalanced and putting way too much pressure on quarterback Richard Lagow and the passing attack. Having a healthy Dan Feeney certainly made a positive difference but it was a creative new package that truly ignited the rushing game and led the Hoosiers to a much-needed 42-36 victory over the Maryland Terrapins.

Hoosiers Find Their Legs, Defeat Maryland 42-36

Hoosiers Find Their Legs, Defeat Maryland 42-36

Written By Sammy Jacobs (@Hoosier_Huddle)

The Indiana Hoosiers (4-4, 2-3) got off to the fast start they needed racing out to a 13-0 lead of the Maryland Terrapins (5-3, 2-3) with a mix of personnel packages featuring three different quarterbacks, Richard Lagow, Zander Diamont, and Tyler Natee and a resurgent running game. The good vibes didn’t last long as the Terps ended the first half on a 21-3 run to take the lead into the locker room after 30 minutes 21-16, however the Hoosiers used a 26-point second half to pull out the victory 42-36. The Hoosiers ran for a season-high 414 yards and six touchdowns, essentially giving Maryland a dose of their own medicine. Devine Redding led the Hoosiers with 130 yards on 17 carries.

Who Will Be Number One? 2016 Indiana Hoosiers Quarterback Preview

Who Will Be Number One? 2016 Indiana Hoosiers Quarterback Preview

Just like that, one of the most prolific signal callers in Indiana history is gone. Nate Sudfeld is off to the NFL, after a remarkably efficient four-year career. As a senior in 2015, Nate led the Big Ten in passing yards per game, passing yards, total offense per game, total offense, touchdowns, passing, yards per completion, yards per attempt and TD-INT ratio. Sudfeld leaves Bloomington as IU’s all-time leader in passing touchdowns (61), passing yardage (7,879), 350-yard games (6), 300-yard games (11), 250-yard games (13), 200-yard games (19), four-touchdown games (5) and three-touchdown games (10),and is tied for first in 400-yard games (1).

He was underappreciated during his career, and his stellar play was not really praised until he either split snaps or missed time due to injury. Sudfeld had to share the spotlight during his career, until he was finally given the keys to the offense in his last two seasons. When he was on the field, he was one of the most productive quarterbacks in the nation, and productivity like that is really hard to replicate, let alone replace. Don’t tell that to Kevin Wilson and offensive coordinator Kevin Johns however, as that is exactly what they aim to do with a new group of quarterbacks in 2016.

Wilson Wants Quarterbacks to 'Just Do the Best You Can'

Wilson Wants Quarterbacks to 'Just Do the Best You Can'

When it comes to the Indiana Hoosier quarterback competition Kevin Wilson does not want to repeat mistakes from the past. A quarterback back battle between three players that may have cost his 2013 team, and probably the 2014 team as well, a bowl berth when he gave a fair and equal shot to Cam Coffman, Nate Sudfeld, and Tre Roberson.

At today's media session prior to practice Wilson said, "We're not going to be equal, not trying to be fair. Few years ago I tried to be equal and fair, and all I did was make everybody mad, and they got equal reps and equal throws and equal opportunity and everybody was getting mad. We were trying to be so fair to everyone that, egos got involved."
