Usually people do not get to open gifts until Christmas morning, however Indiana fans are celebrating on Christmas Eve as the Hoosiers have had quite the portal haul on Tuesday. Just shortly after getting a commitment from quarterback Fernando Mendoza, the Hoosiers got a weapon for him in wide receiver Makai Jackson from Appalachian State.

To say it is a busy time for Curt Cignetti and his staff would be an understatement. With a first round exit from the CFP last week, it gives the coaching staff more time to fill holes through the portal. Information on who IU is pursuing and which players are visiting has been incredibly hard to come by but we do know the staff has been working hard and the portal class has begun with a headlining addition: former Cal Golden Bears quarterback Fernando Mendoza has committed to Indiana.

Coming into the first round of the College Football Playoff, the Indiana offense was averaging 426.4 yards per game and a whopping 41.3 points per game. On a cold night in South Bend, the Hoosiers looked to keep this success going. Unfortunately for IU, the offense was uncharacteristically out of rhythm. In the first half, the Hoosiers had four drives reach Notre Dame territory, only to come away with three points, as three punts and an interception stalled many of their promising drives.

What’s at Stake: The Indiana Hoosiers and Notre Dame Fighting Irish both made the College Playoff Football. In case the ramifications of that are not 100% clear, this game is part of the tournament that will decide who is the national champion. The winner of this contest gets to claim the first victory ever in the 12-team playoff and advances to the Sugar Bowl for a crack at Georgia. The Bulldogs will likely be without starting quarterback Carson Beck and that could open the door for a shot to reach the College Football Playoff Semifinals. Obviously, there are additional in-state ramifications but it gets no bigger than an actual playoff game and that is the opportunity in front of both teams on Friday night.
