As first reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel, the Indiana Hoosiers have lost offensive lineman Nick Kidwell for the entire 2024 season with a knee injury. Kidwell is a seventh-year player who transferred to Indiana from James Madison. He missed all of spring practice recovering from shoulder surgery that kept him out most of 2023.

Indiana football is officially back on the field for spring practices! Though the head coach will be different this spring, offensive line coach Bob Bostad is back to lead a unit that improved greatly in the 2023 season. There will be some familiar players for Bostad in his second season with the Hoosiers, but plenty of new ones as well. Let’s see how the roster shakes out.

The offensive line unit possesses the most important task in football. They are responsible for protecting the quarterback in the passing game and setting up holes for the running back to run through on rushing plays. The Hoosiers offensive line struggled in 2022. They managed to record 1,330 rushing yards as well as 2,609 passing yards, which doesn’t compete in the Big Ten. Their line gave up 38 sacks and had a net loss of 294 yards. Both of those ranking bottom two in the Big Ten. Last December the Hoosiers hired long-time Wisconsin assistant Bob Bostad as their new offensive line coach and made a handful of changes to their line for the 2023 campaign.

2022 Indiana Football Positional Preview: Offensive Line

The Indiana University football offense was, by all accounts, less than perfect last season. Part of that certainly had to do with QB play, ground attack, and receivers. The bigger picture, and perhaps the reason behind it all, was the offensive line. Indiana’s OL finished 119th in the nation in line yards per carry and 91st nationally in sack rate, putting the team near the bottom of the list in stats related to both pass and run blocking. Offensive line coach Darren Hiller said he’s seen serious improvement among the OL room as apposed to a year ago, especially in how consistent they are. One thing going for Indiana’s offensive line: their experience. There’s not one started on the OL that hasn’t been with the Hoosiers for less than three years.

State of the Room- IUFB Offensive Line

State of the Room- IUFB Offensive Line

The Indiana Hoosiers offense in 2021 was one of the worst units in the country. They were near the bottom in nearly every meaningful statistical category and while it is unfair and inaccurate to point the finger of blame at a single position group (in truth, every single unit outside of maybe tight end was poor), the offensive line was undoubtedly partially at fault. Heading into the season there was cautious optimism that things would be a little better than they had been in 2020 as multiple starters returned and a transfer from Michigan was brought in. It was quickly apparent though that the line had frustratingly and critically regressed. As things stand now, any improvement in the offensive line must come from within as no transfers have been added and position coach Darren Hiller is still in charge of the group.
