The Indiana Hoosiers did not get their usual offensive explosion against the Washington Huskies. UW surprised the Hoosiers with some different defensive concepts than they had previously shown and backup quarterback Tayven Jackson struggled to get into any kind of rhythm. Indiana’s defense got an early pick-six and had multiple big stops and Curt Cignetti and Mike Shanahan turned to the running game to grind out a comfortable 31-17 win in front of a jubilant crowd at sold-out Memorial Stadium.

Matchup to Watch: Week Nine – IU’s Running Game vs. Washington’s Defense

The Indiana Hoosiers improved to 7-0 with a walloping of the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Saturday. Memorial Stadium was sold out (and is now sold out for the rest of the season!) and FOX’s Big Noon crew was in the house. The table was set and then the Hoosiers feasted. The only negative was a thumb injury to starting quarterback Kurtis Rourke that will sideline him for at least one game and likely ends a budding Heisman Trophy campaign. That injury sets up an easy pick for matchup to watch as Tayven Jackson taking center stage as the starting quarterback with ESPN’s College Gameday in Bloomington. However, the focus for this article will be on an aspect of the game that will go a long way towards setting Tayven Jackson up for success: IU’s running game against Washington’s defense.

Saturday’s victory against the Cornhuskers was a historic win – tying the school record for the largest margin of victory against a Big Ten opponent (49 points). While the Hoosiers had an excellent game, one player was missing from the second half that has some fans worrying. Quarterback transfer from Ohio, Kurtis Rourke, didn’t play in the second half due to a thumb injury and won’t play this weekend against Washington. Rourke is supposed to return soon, but until then, redshirt sophomore Tayven Jackson, will be stepping into the role as the Hoosiers’ starting QB for this week.

Hoosier Huddle's College Football Playoff and Bowl Projections - October 20

FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff was in town to see the 6-0 Indiana Hoosiers and the nation was curious: who are these Indiana Hoosiers and are they for real? After a 60-minute beatdown of the previously 5-1 Nebraska Cornhuskers and a 56-7 win for Indiana, the answer ringing out from a sold-out Memorial Stadium was a resounding “YES!” There was a negative from the impressive victory though. Kurtis Rourke injured his thumb in the first half and stood in street clothes during the second half as Tayven Jackson finished the job at quarterback. Rourke is a doubt for the Washington game this weekend and the uncertainty at the most important position in the game is enough to keep them from a projection in the College Football Playoff.
