Cam Jones Leads Hoosiers Contingent of NFL Draft Hopefuls Ahead of This Weekend's NFL Draft

Written by: Nate Comp (@NathanComp1)

The NFL Draft is coming up on Thursday in Kansas City and there are a few Hoosiers with hopes of hearing their name called over the weekend. The Hoosiers have a streak of nine consecutive years with an NFL draft pick, continued last season when Micah McFadden was drafted by the New York Giants in the fifth round. While they have not had a first-round pick in 29 years (second-longest streak in Power Five), it is important for Indiana to continue to stack years in which players are selected in the draft.

2022 Indiana Football Positional Preview: Offensive Line

2022 Indiana Football Positional Preview: Offensive Line

Written by: Andrew Walker (@Andrew_JW17)

The Indiana University football offense was, by all accounts, less than perfect last season. Part of that certainly had to do with QB play, ground attack, and receivers. The bigger picture, and perhaps the reason behind it all, was the offensive line. Indiana’s OL finished 119th in the nation in line yards per carry and 91st nationally in sack rate, putting the team near the bottom of the list in stats related to both pass and run blocking. Offensive line coach Darren Hiller said he’s seen serious improvement among the OL room as apposed to a year ago, especially in how consistent they are. One thing going for Indiana’s offensive line: their experience. There’s not one started on the OL that hasn’t been with the Hoosiers for less than three years.

State of the Room- IUFB Offensive Line

State of the Room- IUFB Offensive Line

Written by: TJ Inman (@TJHoosierHuddle)

The Indiana Hoosiers offense in 2021 was one of the worst units in the country. They were near the bottom in nearly every meaningful statistical category and while it is unfair and inaccurate to point the finger of blame at a single position group (in truth, every single unit outside of maybe tight end was poor), the offensive line was undoubtedly partially at fault. Heading into the season there was cautious optimism that things would be a little better than they had been in 2020 as multiple starters returned and a transfer from Michigan was brought in. It was quickly apparent though that the line had frustratingly and critically regressed. As things stand now, any improvement in the offensive line must come from within as no transfers have been added and position coach Darren Hiller is still in charge of the group.

2020 Position Preview – Offensive Line: Can the Hoosiers Line Push Through to the Next Level in 2020?

2020 Position Preview – Offensive Line: Can the Hoosiers Line Push Through to the Next Level in 2020?

Written by Andrew Walker

Historically, the offensive line for the Hoosiers have been… hit or miss depending on the season. Some great, some good, some really bad. That’s just how the cookie crumbles. When it comes to 2020’s offensive line, there still remains some questions. Partially due to the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic, the public hasn’t been able to see exactly what’s going on at fall camp. Usually, the media and therefore the public would have a pretty good idea of what’s going to be the starting lineup. This year is slightly different. Sure, the five, six, seven best offensive linemen are going to get a majority of the minutes. That’s a given.

Haggard Dedicated to His Commitment on the Indiana Offensive Line

Luke Haggard arrived in Bloomington this winter after enrolling early. The 6-foot-7 offensive lineman from California spent two seasons at Santa Rosa Junior College where he was an all-conference selection. Haggard was rated as one of the top 25 JUCO prospects in his class, and he ultimately chose the Hoosiers over Oregon State, Fresno State, Nevada and others.

Haggard is ready to hit the ground running at Indiana. With his size, Haggard will have a chance to make a big impact in the trenches. When Haggard made the decision to attend a Big Ten school, it was a given he'd need to bulk up his frame. In an interview with Peegs.com, Haggard told reporters he's already gained 15 pounds to get to 265.

Haggard was recruited out of high school to play defensive end, but they moved him over to the offensive line. He explains, "So I really have only been playing tackle for two years. My first year it was learning how to play tackle, everything, the form and all that, and then really I just practiced it. By my second year I was pretty good at tackle at that point, and I started to get recruited for tackle."

Haggard is raw, but his talent and potential are obvious. "The biggest thing at the J.C. (junior college), besides the form, was putting on the weight, but I didn’t have a nutrition plan there. And the weight room was not like this, so it was really hard for me. It was all on my own to do it, but here they help you so much."

Haggard believes the coaches and resources at Indiana will help him unlock his potential. Like any Big Ten program, the Hoosiers are always in need of offensive line depth. Luke Haggard is focused on making the most of his opportunity at IU.

His one word for 2020 is commitment. “I chose commitment because I’m committed to this team,” Haggard told Hoosier Huddle, “No matter how great things are or how hard things may get, I’m always going to be here for the team and I’m always going to give it my all.”
