The Hoosiers Enter The Spring With Plenty of Questions Surrounding The Secondary, With Many Potential Answers.

The Hoosiers Enter The Spring With Plenty of Questions Surrounding The Secondary, With Many Potential Answers.

Entering the 2015 season, all the prognosticators, including us at Hoosier Huddle predicted that Indiana would struggle mightily defending the pass. Unfortunately, that did not begin to describe the Hoosiers complete inability to slow down any of their opponents’ aerial attacks. Out of 127 Football Bowl Subdivision teams, Indiana was second to last, giving up a putrid 313 passing yards per game.

Honestly, this was not a particularly difficult predication to make, as the team entered the season with four new starters in the secondary. To make matters worse, the only player with starting experience in the defensive backfield, Chase Dutra, was sidelined for the first three weeks of the season.

The Hoosiers enter the spring session with plenty of question marks, but a plethora of semi-experienced options, a much better place to be than they were a year ago.
Over the next six weeks the coaching staff will need to assess which of the returning players best fit into new defensive coordinator Tom Allen’s schemes.

In addition to the new hybrid secondary player (Husky), it remains to be seen how the Hoosiers 4-2-5 defensive alignment will affect the play of the corners and safeties. Is there a greater or less of an emphasis on the field verse boundary cornerbacks? Rashad Fant, the team’s unquestioned number one cover man, thrives as the team’s field cornerback. Will the team look for a bigger body to place opposite of Fant on the boundary side of
the field?

2016 Spring Preview: Offensive Line

2016 Spring Preview: Offensive Line

Coming into the 2016 season, Indiana University will be missing some of it’s strongest players from this past season. The offensive line is no exception, taking a hard hit from loosing key player Jason Spriggs, who has gone from a good three-star high school athlete to a stellar All-American offensive linemen. Spriggs decided at the end of the 2015 season to enter the NFL draft and is expected to be a possible second round draft pick. However, despite losing Spriggs, we will see the return of Spriggs counterpart, Dan Feeney.

Redshirt Preview: Tight End Austin Dorris

Redshirt Preview: Tight End Austin Dorris

I’ve often felt that redshirt freshmen are the forgotten members of a football team. Many fans (myself included) read up on high school seniors when they sign with the Indiana Hoosiers and then then wait for those players to make an impact on the field. If the recruit ends up redshirting during his first year on campus, it can be difficult to remember him when it comes time to preview the coming football season. What does the player offer? If he came in as an athlete, what position is he going to play after practicing for a full year? How does he fit in on the depth chart? How much progress has there been in his game during his time away from the watchful eyes of fans?

2016 Spring Preview: Tight Ends

2016 Spring Preview: Tight Ends

The tight end position was a major key to the success the Hoosiers had on offense in 2015, despite injuries and moving tackle Brandon Knight to tight end for the majority of the season. Indiana will enter spring practice with three healthy tight ends in Danny Friend, Jordan Fuchs, and Austin Dorris. IU will have to replace the production of Michael Cooper (17 catches, 205 yards, 2 TDs) and Anthony Corsoro (10 catches 142 yards) on and off the field.

2016 Spring Preview: Wide Receivers

2016 Spring Preview: Wide Receivers

After a very rough 2014 campaign, the Indiana Hoosiers wide receivers bounced back in a big way and had a solid 2015 season. In fact, the Hoosiers had three receivers exceed 650 yards on the season (Paige with 684, Jones with 906 and Cobbs with 1,035 yards) and eight receivers with double-digit catches. There were still some issues with drops but most of the pass catchers return in 2016 and this is one of the deepest positions on the IU roster.
