2023 Position Previews: Can a Very New Cornerback Group Gel in Time to Succeed in 2023?

Indiana’s secondary was supposed to be a strength. The Hoosiers had veterans with a lot of playing experience returning and there was a hope that 2021 was just a fluke. The unit with Tiawan Mullen and Monster Matthews and Jaylin Williams would rebound and play more like the group that showed so much promise in 2020. Instead, the bottom fell out and IU’s pass defense was largely abysmal. The Hoosiers gave up a passer rating of 152.42 and opponents threw 30 touchdowns to just seven interceptions against Indiana. For reference, IU’s passer rating was 104.97 with 16 touchdowns and 13 interceptions on the season. IU’s coaching staff knew changes had to be made this position group is unrecognizable from last season.

Indiana husky Noah Pierre has done everything IU and the coaching staff has asked of him. They needed him to play corner last year because of injury, he slid over from safety and fit in nicely. This year IU wants to have their best players on the field at the same time and that means moving Pierre to IU’s nickel position called ‘husky’. It’s a move that Pierre loves.

Brandon Shelby is the longest tenured coach within the Indiana football program as he starts his 11th season with the Hoosiers. He’s been with the program since 2011 when he arrived on Kevin Wilson’s original staff in Bloomington. Earlier this offseason, Indiana head coach Tom Allen promoted Shelby to assistant head coach in addition to coaching the cornerbacks. However, Shelby had bigger long-term goals.

The Indiana Hoosiers secondary returns young, experienced talent in 2020 and the expectations for the unit are sky high. The Hoosiers went through some growing pains in the secondary in 2019 as they ranked 10th in the Big Ten in yards per game allowed (213.7). So Indiana has still has work to do on a unit that returns Tiawan Mullen, Reese Taylor, Raheem Layne and Jaylin Williams among others. The Hoosiers need to find more defining plays in the secondary.

IU Cornerbacks Coach Brandon Shelby: “The Best People are Going to Play”

Indiana University cornerbacks coach Brandon Shelby spoke to the media this week via Zoom as the Indiana Hoosiers staff continues to work with players remotely and prepare for the upcoming season. Shelby is entering his 10th season with the program and he loves where his position group is at heading into the summer.

“We surely have a great foundation,” Shelby said of the cornerback group. “I’m very, very satisfied with where we are going to start come the fall.”
