Spring Preview- The Hoosier Secondary Has the Talent, Now They Need Efficiency

Spring Preview- The Hoosier Secondary Has the Talent, Now They Need Efficiency

Written by Evan McShane (@veryreasonable)

While the efficiency numbers were not great, the Indiana defense boasted a respectable secondary in 2019. The Hoosiers thrived off of creating turnovers. Indiana tied for 33rd in the country with 13 team interceptions and they tied for fifth in the country in fumble recoveries with 13. With the departure of Hoosier safety Jonathan Crawford, Indiana has big shoes to fill. Luckily, there are a number of players capable of stepping up to the plate. IU's secondary will still be young next fall, but they will have the luxury of depth. Heading into spring, the IU defensive backs appears to be one of the most talented position groups on the roster. Indiana will return several starters from last year, and Tom Allen and his staff have recruited cornerbacks and safeties very well the past few years. While it is yet to be seen which individuals will produce most, the secondary will be among Indiana's strongest units in 2019.

2016 Defensive Backs Preview: There's Depth And Talent, But Will Results Come?

2016 Defensive Backs Preview: There's Depth And Talent, But Will Results Come?

Indiana's pass defense was atrocious last season, ranking next to last in the nation giving up 313.8 yards per game. Despite the extremely low ranking, Indiana did manage to do some things decently, and showed that they have some talent in the secondary. The Hoosiers picked off 12 passes which ranked as a tie for 56th nationally. This season the entire secondary returns, most of them healthy and ready to play in 2016. On paper this may be the deepest and the most raw talent the Hoosiers have had in the secondary, probably ever, but can they turn names on paper into results on the field? The answer to that question is probably the difference between another bowl game, possibly seven or eight wins, and spending the holidays at home.

Hoosiers CB Rashard Fant Embraces Leadership Role

Hoosiers CB Rashard Fant Embraces Leadership Role

Rashard Fant arrived at IU after a very successful high school career in Fairburn, Georgia. Fant was a four-star recruit that was expected to eventually be a starter in IU’s secondary. However, he was only 5’9” and many questioned whether or not his 160-pound frame would be able to add enough size to deal with the demands of high D1 football and B1G receivers. An ESPN recruiting analyst wrote about Fant in February of 2013: “Fant’s biggest detriment is likely his lack of ideal stature and height….overall, we really like Fant’s tools, but are concerned with the measurables.” Fant redshirted as a freshman in the fall of 2013 and went to work on proving those doubters wrong.

The Hoosiers Enter The Spring With Plenty of Questions Surrounding The Secondary, With Many Potential Answers.

The Hoosiers Enter The Spring With Plenty of Questions Surrounding The Secondary, With Many Potential Answers.

Entering the 2015 season, all the prognosticators, including us at Hoosier Huddle predicted that Indiana would struggle mightily defending the pass. Unfortunately, that did not begin to describe the Hoosiers complete inability to slow down any of their opponents’ aerial attacks. Out of 127 Football Bowl Subdivision teams, Indiana was second to last, giving up a putrid 313 passing yards per game.

Honestly, this was not a particularly difficult predication to make, as the team entered the season with four new starters in the secondary. To make matters worse, the only player with starting experience in the defensive backfield, Chase Dutra, was sidelined for the first three weeks of the season.

The Hoosiers enter the spring session with plenty of question marks, but a plethora of semi-experienced options, a much better place to be than they were a year ago.
Over the next six weeks the coaching staff will need to assess which of the returning players best fit into new defensive coordinator Tom Allen’s schemes.

In addition to the new hybrid secondary player (Husky), it remains to be seen how the Hoosiers 4-2-5 defensive alignment will affect the play of the corners and safeties. Is there a greater or less of an emphasis on the field verse boundary cornerbacks? Rashad Fant, the team’s unquestioned number one cover man, thrives as the team’s field cornerback. Will the team look for a bigger body to place opposite of Fant on the boundary side of
the field?

Hoosiers Survive Upset Bid By Salukis

Hoosiers Survive Upset Bid By Salukis

The Indiana Hoosiers (1-0) survived an impressive offensive display from the Southern Illinois Salukis (0-1) to win the opening game of their 2015 season, 48-47. The Salukis got within one point after Mark Iannotti's fourth touchdown pass of the afternoon and decided to attempt a two-point conversion and go for the win. Iannotti rolled to the right and fired a pass that was broken up by Indiana defensive back Andre Brown. The ensuing onside kick was recovered by Anthony Corsaro and the Hoosiers knocked off their FCS foe at Memorial Stadium by the narrowest of margins.

Countdown to Kickoff: 14 Days (Andre Brown Jr. and Marqui Hawkins)

Countdown to Kickoff: 14 Days (Andre Brown Jr. and Marqui Hawkins)

Written By: Nick Holmes (@HoosierHolmes)

'Get on your feet Hoosier fans, it's third down!' False alarm, just making sure you are paying attention. However, with only two weeks left until the Hoosiers take field for their opener, now's the time to start exercising those vocal chords in preparation for cheering on your Cream and Crimson this fall. The team would greatly benefit from the presence of a loud and boisterous twelfth man, so they are depending on us to fill the stadium and provide them with a home-field advantage. But I digress, today we are continuing our string of double dips into the Hoosier roster by looking at a couple of fresh faces from Georgiawho will be wearing the number 14, Andre Brown Jr. and Marqui Hawkins. Each made their way to Bloomington this year, but their journeys to campus were quite different.
