2016 Spring Preview: Offensive Line

2016 Spring Preview: Offensive Line

Coming into the 2016 season, Indiana University will be missing some of it’s strongest players from this past season. The offensive line is no exception, taking a hard hit from loosing key player Jason Spriggs, who has gone from a good three-star high school athlete to a stellar All-American offensive linemen. Spriggs decided at the end of the 2015 season to enter the NFL draft and is expected to be a possible second round draft pick. However, despite losing Spriggs, we will see the return of Spriggs counterpart, Dan Feeney.

2015 Positional Preview: Offensive Line

It’s not really a surprise when I say that the offensive line will be a strength for the Hoosiers, as it has been for the last three seasons. Coach Frey has done a masterful job of molding and making these young men into a formidable force, capable of taking on any defensive front they come up against in the trenches. When injuries attempted to threaten the depth of the group, it was just a case of next man up, the unit barely missing a beat. For the last three seasons the Hoosiers have set numerous offensive records and the guys upfront have been a big reason for that. Whether it was protecting one of the team’s prolific passers or opening up holes for Tevin Coleman, these guys have done it all  and at a high level.

While the team did bid farewell to some talented contributors up front, including senior Ralston Evans, whose career was short due to injuries, the 2015 iteration of the Indiana offensive line has the potential to be the best yet.

We are only a couple of days away from the Cream and Crimson game, an opportunity for fans to get their first glimpse of the 2015 Indiana Hoosiers. Those in attendance will be looking to see how Nate Sudfeld has recovered since his injury, how the receiving corps has developed, how sophomore running back Devine Redding looks with increased carries, and how senior Nick Mangieri has adjusted to being back at defensive end.

But beyond the obvious, here’s the names of some of the under-the-radar players you should keep an eye on this Saturday.

The threat of thunderstorms did little to deter the Hoosiers from getting in valuable reps this morning during the team’s sixth spring practice. Big Ten Football Analysts Howard Griffith and Gerry DiNardo, former Indiana Head Football coach, were in town to get a closer look at the Cream and Crimson. Some the big plays of the day included a great touchdown grab by sophomore receiver J-Shun Harris II and a jarring blow landed by Antonio Allen on a running back that resulted in a fumble which was recovered by the defense.

The oft overlooked and unheralded heroes that labor in the trenches, the offensive line is tasked with opening up running lanes and keeping the quarterback upright. They perform their duties in near obscurity, typically only drawing attention to themselves when a play falls apart or if they commit a penalty. During Kevin Wilson’s time in Bloomington the Hoosiers offensive line has been one of the more consistent groups of the team, despite injuries challenging its depth.

Kevin Wilson's squad is getting better every day.  Former Ohio State commit and Lawrence Central star committed to the Hoosiers for the 2014 season.  Gardner originally signed with the Ohio State Buckeyes for the 2013 season but was dismissed from the team prior to the season and decided to go the prep school route.  He attended the Milford Academy in New York.
