In June of 2018 wide receiver Emery Simmons committed to play for Indiana head coach Tom Allen and the Hoosiers, however in the next six months Simmons changed his mind twice, committing and de-committing to North Carolina and Penn State, before signing with UNC in December of 2018. It’s now 2022 and Simmons is looking for more opportunities to make plays and his faith in and familiarity with Tom Allen has led him back to the cream and crimson in Bloomington.

IU had plenty of turnover at the position and now will be looking for a new wide receiver coach after Grant Heard bailed for UCF just days before spring practice started in Bloomington. The Hoosiers leading returning receiver is D.J. Matthews, but after losing Ty Fryfogle to the NFL Draft and Miles Marshall, Camron Buckley and Jordyn Williams among others to the transfer portal, it is time to see who can make their mark in spring practice and get a leg up on the competition for the starting spots this fall.

The wide receiver group that the Hoosiers went into 2021 with was supposed to be one of the best in the conference, but by the end of the year it was almost unrecognizable. This unit was a major disappointment in a season where there were plenty of disappointments. After losing D.J. Matthews for the season during the Western Kentucky game, this unit disappeared. However, the 2022 wide receiver room will look vastly different for the Hoosiers.

While spring break is coming to a close and the first frantic weekend of the NCAA tournament is wrapping up the Indiana Hoosiers football team has picked up their first commitment in the class of 2019 as Emery Simmons, a six-foot-two wide receiver has pledged his verbal to Tom Allen and company. Simmons is out of South View High School in Hope Mills, North Carolina and is rated as a three-star prospect and the 622nd best prospect in the country by 247 Sports Composite rankings. Simmons was on campus in Bloomington for a junior day on March 3rd.
