2024 Indiana University Football Pro Day Notes

On March 5th, scouts from across the NFL flew into Bloomington for Indiana’s Pro Day to evaluate the Hoosiers’ draft eligible stars from the 2023 season with hopes to get a good look at their strengths and weaknesses. These Pro Days are important, as we saw just last year Cam Jones performing well at the Pro Day and ending up winning a Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs. While no Super Bowl is guaranteed, these Hoosiers hope to follow in Cam’s footsteps in the future, and a strong Pro Day is a great way to get there.

The Indiana University football team continues to prepare for the 2023 season, working hard in fall camp which has now entered its third week. The running game has struggled for the past couple of seasons but with a talented group of backs and a offensive line coach, there is hope that the Hoosiers can exceed the 3.36 yards per carry they averaged in 2022. IU has not exceeded four yards per carry in a season since 2018 when they ran for 4.41 yards per rush. Shaun Shivers has departed but IU returns Josh Henderson, Jaylin Lucas, Trent Howland and David Holloman and added Wake Forest transfer Christian Turner.

2023 Position Preview: The Running Back Room is Deep, Diverse and Ready to Run

The Indiana University running game has not been a reliable weapon for a few seasons now. The Hoosiers averaged just 3.36 yards per carry in 2022. That came after averaging 3.2 yards per carry in 2021 and just 3.13 yards per carry in 2020. You need to go back to 2018 to feel good about the rushing attack (4.41 yards per carry). Some of the lack of success needs to fall at the feet of the running backs but the offensive line is a major culprit as well.

Hoosiers Spring Football Preview: Can the Running Attack Build on the Last Two Weeks of 2022?

While the 2022 Indiana Hoosiers started the season with a win against Illinois utilizing essentially an air-raid offensive scheme, the conclusion of the year saw the Hoosiers rely heavily on their rushing attack. With Walt Bell’s emphasis on finding a dual threat quarterback this offseason and ultimately finding the mobile Tayven Jackson in the portal, we can expect more of a balanced attack through the air and on the ground in 2023. Add in the hiring of Wisconsin’s Bob Bostad as the new offensive line coach, and surely the rushing attack will be an important part of the Hoosiers offensive gameplan moving forward.
