The Hoosiers special teams unit could be one of the best in the Big Ten in 2023 if coordinator Kasey Teegardin can put all the pieces together. The Hoosiers have some potentially great pieces at every position of this phase of the game headlined by All-American kick returner Jaylin Lucas.

The Indiana University running game has not been a reliable weapon for a few seasons now. The Hoosiers averaged just 3.36 yards per carry in 2022. That came after averaging 3.2 yards per carry in 2021 and just 3.13 yards per carry in 2020. You need to go back to 2018 to feel good about the rushing attack (4.41 yards per carry). Some of the lack of success needs to fall at the feet of the running backs but the offensive line is a major culprit as well.

For teams like Indiana who are trying to spring upsets or get back on track special teams plays a vital role. Just ask Scott Frost at Nebraska who onsides kicked his way onto a seat hotter than the sun in Week 0.

Last season, IU was either great or terrible in the special teams department. Placekicker Charles Campbell was one of the best kickers in the Big Ten early on but, like the rest of the team, tanked in the second half. IU had little-to-no return game after D.J. Matthews and Reese Taylor got injured and Punter James Evans was very inconsistent.

A successful running game is created by several different factors working together in harmony. The offensive line needs to create holes for the running back. The running back needs to hit those holes at the right time and with enough speed and power to get through arm tackles and create yards after contact

2022 Spring IUFB Position Battles – Running Back

2022 Spring IUFB Position Battles – Running Back

Written by: TJ Inman (@TJHoosierHuddle)

Indiana fans knew there would be changes at the running back position. Some change is inevitable, particularly after a disappointing season. However, no one could have predicted the full-scale changeover that has taken place. A few players have exited, several have arrived and Deland McCullough unexpectedly bolted for South Bend to be the running backs coach for Notre Dame. Tom Allen responded by bringing in veteran Craig Johnson to coach this group as well as be the associate head coach. Despite the coaching change, no additional players departed and the Hoosiers enter this spring with a nearly completely new running back room bolstered by a couple of key transfers. How things play out during the spring with a new position coach and a new group of players playing in a completely new offensive system is anyone’s guess.
