Indiana fans knew there would be changes at the running back position. Some change is inevitable, particularly after a disappointing season. However, no one could have predicted the full-scale changeover that has taken place. A few players have exited, several have arrived and Deland McCullough unexpectedly bolted for South Bend to be the running backs coach for Notre Dame. Tom Allen responded by bringing in veteran Craig Johnson to coach this group as well as be the associate head coach. Despite the coaching change, no additional players departed and the Hoosiers enter this spring with a nearly completely new running back room bolstered by a couple of key transfers. How things play out during the spring with a new position coach and a new group of players playing in a completely new offensive system is anyone’s guess.

The Indiana quarterback room is becoming a very tricky thing to handle for the Hoosiers. “We will have multiple quarterbacks ready to play on Saturday.” Indiana head coach Tom Allen said on Thursday ahead of his team’s noon matchup with the Rutger Scarlet Knights. IU has been down to just one scholarship quarterback, Donaven McCulley, after season-opening starter Michael Penix was hurt against Penn State and backup Jack Tuttle knocked out against Ohio State.

The Indiana Hoosiers had yet another running back put his name into the transfer portal on Monday as Tim Baldwin Jr. is looking to transfer from IU. “Tim Baldwin Jr. has chosen to enter the transfer portal and will no longer be with our football team.” Indiana head coach Tom Allen told reporters on Monday morning.

Deland McCullough is back for his second stint with the Hoosiers after a stint in the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs as their running backs coach. McCullough’s first task as running back coach for IU is replacing Stevie Scott who was the starting running back last year and took most of the carries.

Indiana has had a long run of strong running backs with names such as Tevin Coleman. Jordan Howard, and Stevie Scott. Scott has opted to declare for the NFL this year, which means a new running back will have to carry the load this year for the Hoosiers.
With the return of Deland McCullough as running backs coach as well as associate head coach, the battle for the position will be very intense during spring practice beginning on Monday.
