All of the hype was in Bloomington for Saturday as ESPN’s College GameDay was in town for their pregame show. IU showed that it could still compete with a good Washington team with a backup quarterback.

Hoosier punter James Evans came to Indiana having never played a down of American football and barring something bizzare, will leave Bloomington as IU’s all-time leader in punting average. The New Zealand native traveled many miles to reach Bloomington, but his journey as a punter has been leaps and bounds from 2021.

Growing up in Auckland, New Zealand Evan’s never played any type of football until joining the Hoosiers program in 2021. The Hoosiers special teams unit could be one of the best in the Big Ten in 2023 if coordinator Kasey Teegardin can put all the pieces together. The Hoosiers have some potentially great pieces at every position of this phase of the game headlined by All-American kick returner Jaylin Lucas.
