The Indiana Hoosiers held their first spring football game since 2019 on Thursday night in Bloomington. It was just enough of a taste for fans to whet their appetite for the fall. Head coach Curt Cignetti described the game as a glorified practice. Here are five things that we learned about IU’s offense on Thursday night.

We’ll get our first look at first-year head coach Curt Cignetti’s progress with the team this week as Indiana football officially kicks off their spring game Thursday night at 8pm inside Memorial Stadium. The spring game will mark the end of the spring practice session which lasted roughly a month.

Over the past several years, the Indiana Hoosiers have had some elite position groups from top to bottom. Some that come to mind after talking with our own Sammy Jacobs include the 2013 QB room with Sudfeld, Roberson, and Coffman, the 2020 CB room with Mullen, Taylor, and Williams, the 2013 RB room with Coleman, Houston, and Roberts, the 2015 OL room with Feeney, Stepaniak, Martin, and Spriggs, and even LB rooms consisting of Scales, Oliver, and Covington to McFadden, Jones, and Casey more recently.

The excitement is buzzing around the Indiana football program and now we’re entering a critical time to start building for next season: spring football. The Indiana Hoosiers will hit the turf at Memorial Stadium for the final time on Saturday in the battle for the Old Brass Spittoon. With a win IU will not only raise the Victory Flag, they will retain the Old Brass Spittoon for back-to-back matchups for the first time since 1969 when the Hoosiers won their third straight against the Spartans. Both teams enter the season with 3-7 (1-6) records so what will IU have to do to come out victorious.

On Saturday junior Donaven McCulley talked the talk and walked the walk, proving his doubters wrong and imposing his will. The quarterback turned wide receiver wowed the crowd with his one-handed touchdown catch and his presence of mind to know he wasn’t down on a catch and run.

Quarterback turned wide receiver Donaven McCulley slimmed down this offseason as he tries to become a more explosive player. McCulley was not overweight last year when he had about 10-percent body fat, but he has slimmed down to around seven percent. The physique change should help he be quicker.
