The 2023 Indiana Hoosiers will feature a slew of new names in the defensive secondary after many of the staples that Hoosier fans have grown accustomed to have either graduated or moved on to the professional level. Players like Jaylin Williams, Tiawan Mullen, Bryant Fitzgerald, and Devon “Monster” Matthews will be absent this season. Brandon Shelby returns to coach the cornerbacks, but new co-defensive coordinator Matt Guerrieri will take over the safeties after Jason Jones was hired by North Carolina.

The Indiana Hoosiers have started their spring practice session and one of the biggest questions facing the team is who will step up at the wide receiver position. IU had plenty of turnover at the position and now will be looking for a new wide receiver coach after Grant Heard bailed for UCF just days before spring practice started in Bloomington. The Hoosiers leading returning receiver is D.J. Matthews, but after losing Ty Fryfogle to the NFL Draft and Miles Marshall, Camron Buckley and Jordyn Williams among others to the transfer portal, it is time to see who can make their mark in spring practice and get a leg up on the competition for the starting spots this fall.

2022 Spring IUFB Position Battles – Running Back

Indiana fans knew there would be changes at the running back position. Some change is inevitable, particularly after a disappointing season. However, no one could have predicted the full-scale changeover that has taken place. A few players have exited, several have arrived and Deland McCullough unexpectedly bolted for South Bend to be the running backs coach for Notre Dame. Tom Allen responded by bringing in veteran Craig Johnson to coach this group as well as be the associate head coach. Despite the coaching change, no additional players departed and the Hoosiers enter this spring with a nearly completely new running back room bolstered by a couple of key transfers. How things play out during the spring with a new position coach and a new group of players playing in a completely new offensive system is anyone’s guess.

The Indiana Hoosiers kickoff spring football practice on Tuesday and head coach Tom Allen met with the media via Zoom to give an update on his program, that included a reworked contract for Allen.

“I'm excited to be back and ready for spring football tomorrow.” Allen said. “Really looking forward to that. We had a great six-week period with our guys in the weight room. Coach Wellman and his staff have done a tremendous job with that group and on a consistent basis. I'm looking forward to getting back on the field with our guys. A lot of guys back from the 2020 season as you know. I'm anxious to see these guys and run them around a little bit.”

The Hoosier Huddle Spring Practice Preview series continues as we take a look at Indiana’s special teams unit. It’s a unit that had some very strong parts as well as areas for improvement in 2020 and will have to replace punter Haydon Whitehead. The Hoosiers finished the year 25th in net field position rankings and fifth in field goal efficiency according to Footballoutsiders.com. However, the Hoosiers ranked 86th in kickoff return efficiency. The Hoosiers do have the majority of their special teamers back in 2021, so let’s take a look at the group heading into spring practice.
