Hoosier Huddle's College Football Playoff and Bowl Projections-October 27

In many ways, Saturday’s win over Washington felt like a celebration. ESPN’s College GameDay was in Bloomington and fans and former players celebrated Lee Corso and the 1979 Holiday Bowl squad. People flooded campus and Memorial Stadium to celebrate the outstanding 7-0 start for the Indiana Hoosiers and revel in the attention brought to the program by Curt Cignetti, his staff and his players. Longtime and long-suffering fans celebrated weeks of football that have brought so much joy after many, many years of crushing disappointment.

After A Day Of Upsets, What Are Indiana Football's Best Upset Wins?

On Friday afternoon we saw one of, if not the biggest upset in the history of the NCAA tournament when the second seeded Michigan State Spartans took it on the chin from the Blue Raiders of Middle Tennessee State. That shocking upset got me thinking about what some of Indiana Football's biggest upsets were.

I went through the IU record book and found quite a few occasions where the Hoosiers pulled off wins against ranked teams as underdogs. Now there are some caveats to my search. First, the AP did not rank teams until 1936, so it is hard to judge some of the pre-ranking games so this list is from 1937 on. I was also hesitant to include the games from the World War II Years (1941-1945) due to the craziness of rosters and honestly it was just easier to keep those teams out of this list. I found 10 upsets that should be noted on this list and it will be in chronological order.

The countdown continues…there are only 79 days remaining before the start of IU’s 2015 season! #79 is currently not worn by any IU player (we are guessing that it will be filled by an incoming freshman O-lineman but many players have yet to choose a number). Instead of choosing a former Hoosier, we are going to “honor” one of the more memorable IU teams from the past…the 1979 (get it? 79!) Holiday Bowl champions.
