Hoosier Huddle's Game Day Primer: No. 5 Indiana Hoosiers at No. 2 Ohio State

Hoosier Huddle's Game Day Primer: No. 5 Indiana Hoosiers at No. 2 Ohio State

What’s at Stake

In a word: everything. In the long history of this series, no game has had more on the line. The Ohio State Buckeyes are ranked #2 but they already have one loss and cannot afford a second defeat. This is, essentially, a play-in game for the Big Ten Championship Game with the winner nearly locking up a bid to play the Oregon Ducks in Indianapolis. In addition, there are major College Football Playoff implications.

The Indiana Hoosiers entered the game at 9-0 for the first time in school history and a sold-out Memorial Stadium welcomed the reigning National Champions to Bloomington with a chance for the Hoosiers to secure their first ever ten-win season. Kurtis Rourke tossed two touchdown passes in the first half to give the Hoosiers a 17-3 lead at the break but the offense fell apart in the final 30 minutes. IU’s defense held on to keep the Hoosiers in front and Nico Radicic nailed a pair of field goals to give Indiana the 20-15 victory.

What’s at Stake: Indiana and Michigan State meet annually for the Old Brass Spittoon so there is a rivalry trophy on the line for the first time in the Curt Cignetti era. Of course, the Indiana Hoosiers have a whole lot at stake as the calendar turns to November. Indiana is ranked 13th in the country and has the resume of a team that should be comfortably in the top ten. The initial College Football Playoff rankings come out on Tuesday, November 5 and a win in East Lansing would give the Hoosiers a real shot to be in the first bracket reveal. IU is also playing for a spot in the Big Ten Championship Game and a win is necessary to remain in first place in the league. Michigan State is has four wins and is trying to reach a bowl game in Jonathan Smith’s first season. They have games remaining against Illinois, Rutgers and Purdue and a win over the Hoosiers would give the Spartans a chance to reach six, seven or even eight victories.

Matchup to Watch: Week Nine – IU’s Running Game vs. Washington’s Defense

The Indiana Hoosiers improved to 7-0 with a walloping of the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Saturday. Memorial Stadium was sold out (and is now sold out for the rest of the season!) and FOX’s Big Noon crew was in the house. The table was set and then the Hoosiers feasted. The only negative was a thumb injury to starting quarterback Kurtis Rourke that will sideline him for at least one game and likely ends a budding Heisman Trophy campaign. That injury sets up an easy pick for matchup to watch as Tayven Jackson taking center stage as the starting quarterback with ESPN’s College Gameday in Bloomington. However, the focus for this article will be on an aspect of the game that will go a long way towards setting Tayven Jackson up for success: IU’s running game against Washington’s defense.
