The Indiana Hoosiers will be replacing both starting linebackers from last season in Aaron Casey and Jacob Mangum-Farrar. IU did hit the transfer portal for several impact linebackers including both starters from James Madison and Jayden McDaniel from Troy. Hoosier Huddle broke down the linebacker position battle earlier this spring, but here is a look at the whole spring.

Over the past several seasons, Indiana has been blessed with NFL caliber linebackers leading the defense. From Micah McFadden (now starting and starring for the New York Giants) to Cam Jones (who won this year’s Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs) to Aaron Casey (likely 2024 NFL Draft pick and combine participant), IU has developed a reputation for always having strong, hard-nosed, intelligent, leaders in the middle of the defense who regularly wreak havoc for Big Ten foes.

Hoosier Huddle is getting ready for the 2024 football season and with a new coaching staff and a totally revamped roster, Indiana Hoosier fans are going to need a roster handy to track all of the new faces. Much attention has been paid to the major revamp on offense under coordinator Mike Shanahan and Tino Sunseri, including our very owner initial depth chart projection just last week. However, the defense needs to be completely rebuilt as well. Once a calling card for Tom Allen’s teams, the IU defense was a sieve for much of the past few seasons. In 2023, Indiana allowed an average of 29.9 points per game including an opposing passer rating of 143.62 and 4.19 yards per rush. There were a few bright spots here and there but the unit was a major disappointment that needs fixed.

As a defensive-minded head coach, linebacker has always been a position near and dear to Tom Allen’s heart. New faces are the recurring theme surrounding these positional previews this year, but Allen has composed a roster of a mix of both returnees and newcomers by way of the transfer portal in this room. If Indiana’s defensive line is as improved as we’re hearing it is, this should allow for the linebackers at the second level of the defense to get into the backfield and make some plays. The Hoosiers finished 95th nationally in tackles for loss and 104th in sacks last season, but an improved front seven led by this linebacker room could really change the complexion of this defense.

The Indiana Hoosiers continued their successful phase two of their recruiting cycle with the addition of Austin Peay linebacker Joshua Rudolph. Rudolph played 18 games over two seasons with the Governors and collected 73 tackles and 7.5 tackles for loss.
