Today was homecoming in Bloomington, and the Indiana defense certainly put on a show for the alums who made the trip down for the Hoosiers 56-7 rout of Nebraska. The IU defense was swallowing up Cornhuskers faster than Indiana native Joey Chestnut could swallow cheeseburgers at halftime. The Hoosiers “attack the ball” mentality certainly paid off this afternoon as they came away with a season-high five turnovers.

Indiana has now become the first bowl eligible team in the country and the first FBS school to reach six wins this season. Indiana had its first Big Ten matchup against UCLA Saturday night and boy did they not disappoint. Throughout the week, Coach Cignetti harped on the fact that their trip to Pasadena would strictly be a business trip, and they treated it just like that. When Aaron Casey joined the Cincinnati Bengals this offseason, he left big shoes to fill. The first-team All-Big 10 linebacker was IU’s undisputed leader on defense over his career. It is not revelatory news to write that Indiana’s football program has struggled for a long while. With a few spikes of good play mixed in, IU’s record has been as poor as any major conference team in the country for the past several decades. Throughout the time, and particularly in recent memory, IU has actually has had some darn good linebackers come through Bloomington: Aaron Casey (leading tackler in 2023 and 2022), Micah McFadden (leading tackler in 2021, 2020 and 2019), Tegray Scales, Marcus Oliver, David Cooper and Matt Mayberry. The lineage at that position is strong and it is through that lens that we preview the 2024 linebacker room under defensive coordinator Bryant Haines.

Jailin Walker is Back From Injury and Ready to Elevate the Defense

On Thursday August 1st, Jailin Walker spoke to the media after the start of Indiana’s fall camp. After recovering from offseason surgery, Walker is excited to be back and playing football again. Walker did not practice during Spring Camp, but still showed up and has become a leader in his new program. During the offseason, his teammates would refer to him as Coach J Walk due to him being on the sidelines and coaching up some of the players.
