2016 Offensive Line Preview: Once Again The Big Guys Upfront Will Pave the Way For IU's Offense

2016 Offensive Line Preview: Once Again The Big Guys Upfront Will Pave the Way For IU's Offense

Written By Lydia Knoll

Indiana has had some star offensive players the last couple of years, including recent NFL draftees Jordan Howard and Nate Sudfeld just to name a few. But the offensive players that are sometimes overlooked also happen to be the guys who make it possible for players like Howard and Sudfeld to show off their skills. These guys are the building blocks of a steady football program, the offensive linemen.

Indiana’s offensive line allowed the least amount of sacks in the Big Ten last year, allowing only 13 sacks. With the help of their line, they were able to generate the most productive total offense in the Big Ten with a total 6,556 yards, averaging 504.3 yards/game and 6.23 yards every play. The 6,556 total yards also happened to be 746 yards more than the second highest total offense in the Big Ten. The offensive line also opened up holes to allow for the second best rushing offense in the Big Ten averaging 210.46 yards/game. Unfortunately, Indiana has lost one of their best offensive lineman, Jason Spriggs, to the Packers but with a strong core of veterans, including All-American Dan Feeney, this group continues to be the bedrock on which IU builds their offense.

The Young Indiana Offensive Line Has Coach Frey Instead of XBox This Spring

The Young Indiana Offensive Line Has Coach Frey Instead of XBox This Spring

The Indiana Hoosiers sported two All-Americans along the offensive line in 2015 and return one of them, Dan Feeney, as well as some other veterans like Jacob Bailey and Dimitric Camiel in 2016. But it is the young talent and the job that coach Greg Frey does on and off the field and the line will be a strength for years to come. Young talent who just a year ago were, playing XBox, or running track or playing intramural basketball. Now you have coach Frey, It’s new for them. You’re seeing them acclimate. Its really the finish of the first college year, but the beginning of next season."

2015 Positional Preview: Offensive Line

2015 Positional Preview: Offensive Line

Written By: Nick Holmes (@HoosierHolmes)

It’s not really a surprise when I say that the offensive line will be a strength for the Hoosiers, as it has been for the last three seasons. Coach Frey has done a masterful job of molding and making these young men into a formidable force, capable of taking on any defensive front they come up against in the trenches. When injuries attempted to threaten the depth of the group, it was just a case of next man up, the unit barely missing a beat. For the last three seasons the Hoosiers have set numerous offensive records and the guys upfront have been a big reason for that. Whether it was protecting one of the team’s prolific passers or opening up holes for Tevin Coleman, these guys have done it all  and at a high level.

While the team did bid farewell to some talented contributors up front, including senior Ralston Evans, whose career was short due to injuries, the 2015 iteration of the Indiana offensive line has the potential to be the best yet.

Countdown to Kickoff: 70 Days (Jacob Bailey)

Written By T.J. Inman (@TJHoosierHuddle)

#70

There are now 70 days until the Indiana Hoosiers open the season against the Southern Illinois Salukis. That means we are taking a look at IU’s #70, RS junior offensive lineman Jacob Bailey.

Jacob Bailey

-Height: 6’5”

-Weight: 298 pounds

-Hometown: Carmel, Indiana (Cathedral High School)

-Year/Position: RS Junior/OL

The Indiana Hoosiers have had great success recently with players from Cathedral High School. Kofi Hughes had a very good career, Anthony Corsaro is a senior leader and solid TE and Jacob Bailey has been a contributor during his first three seasons at IU. Bailey was a lineman at Cathedral and won two state titles (2010 and 2011) with the Irish. He earned All-State honors as a junior and as a senior and was rated the 12th best prospect in the state before committing to IU.

Bailey redshirted the 2012 season and earned scout team player of the week honors for the Ball State game. He was forced into action by injuries to fellow linemen and excelled when given his opportunity. Bailey ended up starting games and appearing in three others during the 2013 season, all at guard. The offense during that season ranked as one of best in school history, setting records for total yards per game (508.5), points per game (38.4) and total touchdowns (62). Bailey’s contributions earned him a place on most All-Freshman teams. He had another solid season in 2014, starting twice at left guard and playing in six games overall. IU’s offensive line helped the Hoosiers rack up a single-season school record 3,163 rushing yards.

Jacob Bailey enters the 2015 season with a chance to start at left guard. However, it’s more likely that he will continue to rotate in at both guard positions and plug holes wherever injuries or fatigue occur. Bailey’s biggest asset is his versatility to play on both sides and the Hoosiers can never have enough experienced linemen at their disposal.

Our countdown rolls on tomorrow as we reach #69. Come back to Hoosier Huddle for great preseason coverage!
