Quarterback Richard Lagow is preparing to open the eyes of NFL scouts at Indiana’s Pro Day on April 3 in Bloomington. Lagow took a long and winding road that ultimately led him to IU for the final two seasons of his college career. The young QB is battle-tested and ready to take whatever road it takes to earn a spot on an NFL roster next fall.

Head coach Tom Allen named redshirt freshman Peyton Ramsey the starting quarterback in a decision that came as a surprise to some, but was deemed inevitable by others. Indiana’s dual-quarterback system has not achieved the level of consistency they had hoped. Despite a promising offseason, Richard Lagow was unable to capitalize on his opportunity as starting quarterback. Peyton Ramsey hasn’t necessarily dominated, but he has a higher completion percentage and quarterback rating than Lagow. Ramsey has converted on 60-percent of his passing attempts. Additionally, his quarterback rating is an impressive 139.1 compared to Lagow’s 117.2, per Sports Reference. Through four games, the overused adage proved to be true: if you have two quarterbacks, you have none.

No one likes to be told they aren’t good enough. It’s a hard pill to swallow. This can be the reality some high school football players face when they turn to junior college. There is no uniform path to make it to the Big Ten – Ian Thomas and Richard Lagow are prime examples. The quarterback and tight end share a special bond having risen the ranks via junior college football, also known as JUCO. Lagow explains, “The JUCO experience is very unique and not a lot of guys can understand it when you talk about it; just kind of the struggles that you go through at junior college and how much we appreciate every single thing about being at a place like Indiana University because we didn't have any of this at JUCO.”
