2016 Linebacker Preview: The Anchors of The IU Defensive Ship

2016 Linebacker Preview: The Anchors of The IU Defensive Ship

In another disappointing season for the Indiana defense, the one bright spot was the growth and production of the linebacking corps. In 2016, a majority of the unit will be back and ready for more. Before we dive into the guys that will make up the “2” of the 4-2-5 defense this year, keep in mind that the husky position will function much like an outside linebacker or striker would. Those guys have been left out of this preview, as we will only focus on the traditional linebackers to avoid confusion.

Over the last few seasons, Coach Wilson has very quietly been assembling one of the league’s most talented units at linebacker. The production was expected, yet absent in the recent past. However, 2015 proved to be the breakout season for the unit if you will. The top three guys last year combined to total 249 tackles to go along with a mess of sacks, PBUs, forced fumbles and recoveries. The unit was a bright spot on a very underwhelming defense, and many of the same guys are back to help the defense take a major jump under new defensive coordinator Tom Allen.

2016 Spring Preview: Linebackers

2016 Spring Preview: Linebackers

Last season’s defense was far from acceptable, and there were very few solid areas of the unit. While they were prone to give up big plays, the linebackers were generally considered to be the “strength” of the defense last season. The 2016 group will be almost identical to one in 2015, which is either a good or bad thing depending on your viewpoint. While the defense hasn’t been good, it doesn’t mean it can’t improve this season.

Countdown to Kickoff: 2 Days (T.J. Simmons)

Countdown to Kickoff: 2 Days (T.J. Simmons)

Written By: Nick Holmes (@HoosierHolmes)

Today marks the start of the 2015 College Football Season, as if you did not know. However, we still have two days left until the Hoosiers take the field for their season opener against the Salukis. This is my final entry into this season's Countdown to Kickoff. I started with a junior standout on the defensive side of the ball, Darius Latham, and I'm ending it in the same fashion with standout junior linebacker T.J. Simmons. This team possesses a ton of potential in their front seven on defense and Simmons is a big reason for that due to his experience and ability.

First Quarter Grades: Indiana Hoosiers Defense

First Quarter Grades: Indiana Hoosiers Defense

While we may be only three games into the season, it also happens to be the quarter mark of the 2013 slate. Isn’t it amazing how much quicker time flies when football is around?! Well, with that unfortunately being the case, we decided it was time to take a look back at the opening trio of games that the Hoosiers have played.

As opposed to doing a boring breakdown of each game, we decided to spice things up a bit and give a first quarter report card to each unit of the team. Yesterday we kicked things off with the offense, but don’t worry, we’re back today grading the defense and tomorrow we will even take a look at special teams and the coaches.

Grades for the Hoosier Offense are after the jump!
