The transfer portal has decimated some teams and the NCAA found it apparent to tweak the rules in recruiting by eliminating signing and initial counting limits in college football for the next two years.

After signing nineteen in the early signing period, Tom Allen and coaching staff hit the recruiting trail to complete the 2020 signing class. The Hoosiers had yet to sign a defensive end in the upcoming recruiting class until Mark Hagen closed in on Jalen Mayala, who announced his commitment to Indiana football following his visit on January 24th.

The Indiana Hoosiers got back to work on their 2020 recruiting class about a week ahead of the February Signing Day. On Monday evening the Hoosiers received a commitment from three-star defensive end Jalen Mayala. He made his announcement via Twitter.

The February signing period Is just a couple weeks away and with the recruiting dead period lifted things are heating up on the trail in college football. Indiana football will host a “junior” day on Sunday January 26th for for 20 prospects (four in the 2022 class and 16 in the 2021 class) according to Matt Weaver of Peegs.com who was the first to publish and confirm the list of prospects.

The recruiting trail just got a little brighter for head Coach Tom Allen. Despite coming up short in back-to-back 5-7 seasons, Allen and the IU coaching staff have managed to bring in IU’s highest ranked recruiting class in 2019. With a verbal commitment from Indiana’s highest-ranked recruit in history this year, it was clear that Allen is truly building something special. Coming off back-to-back road wins, at Maryland and Saturday’s 38-31 finish at Nebraska, it is a fact that Allen’s game plan for building the Indiana football program is indeed effective.

With the early signing period just over two months away, it’s time to take a look at who has committed to play football for Indiana so far. Tom Allen set the bar high with the highest-ranked recruiting class in IU football history in 2019. As of October 9th, Indiana’s 2020 class is ranked 60th nationally and 12th in the Big Ten, according to 247Sports. (All rankings of players are directly from 247Sports).

It has been a quiet July for the Hoosiers on the recruiting front, but it came alive on Thursday afternoon as three-star athlete Javon Swinton pledged his services to Tom Allen and his staff. The Hoosiers plucked the 6’1” 160-pound athlete out of ACC country. Swinton is out of North Stafford High School in Stafford, Virginia.

There is never such a thing as too early when it comes to recruiting no matter what class we’re talking about. The class of ’18 has came to a close pretty much as Tom Allen has gave the Hoosiers an amazing foundation to build upon for the future. The focus of that class was mainly on the defensive end as the team loses a bunch of leaders and production to graduation. Those roles will have to be filled, but that is a topic that Hoosier Huddle has been attacking the past few weeks with the position battle previews. This incoming class may be very good and comes with plenty of potential, but to really take advantage of it, they will need to keep the momentum coming in this year’s class and beyond. That’s why I’ll be taking a shot at pinpointing the top targets for the class of ’19 for Tom Allen and the Hoosiers.
