State of the Room- IUFB Offensive Line

State of the Room- IUFB Offensive Line

Written by: TJ Inman (@TJHoosierHuddle)

The Indiana Hoosiers offense in 2021 was one of the worst units in the country. They were near the bottom in nearly every meaningful statistical category and while it is unfair and inaccurate to point the finger of blame at a single position group (in truth, every single unit outside of maybe tight end was poor), the offensive line was undoubtedly partially at fault. Heading into the season there was cautious optimism that things would be a little better than they had been in 2020 as multiple starters returned and a transfer from Michigan was brought in. It was quickly apparent though that the line had frustratingly and critically regressed. As things stand now, any improvement in the offensive line must come from within as no transfers have been added and position coach Darren Hiller is still in charge of the group.

Tuesday was rumored to be the day that the Big Ten finally released their 2020 football schedule. That time has come and gone and reports are coming out that the a COVID-19 outbreak at Rutgers has Big Ten Commission Kevin Warren rethinking things. To his credit Commissioner Warren is reaching out to the student-athletes who will be putting themselves in harm’s way so that the current model of college sports may survive.

Northwestern was the latest Big Ten program to pause workouts for a positive COVID-19 test. Beginning on June 8th, the Indiana athletic department had administered 408 COVID-19 tests which resulted in 33 positive cases. The Hoosier football team had paused their workouts on July 17th with guidance from the IU Athletics Medical Advisory Group. IU resumed its football workouts on July 31st.

The Coronavirus became very real for one Indiana football family over the last few weeks as freshman offensive lineman Brady Feeney has been struck hard by the virus.
