After signing eighteen in the early signing period, Tom Allen and coaching staff hit the recruiting trail to complete the 2020 signing class. The Hoosiers had yet to sign a defensive end in the upcoming recruiting class until Mark Hagen closed in on Jalen Mayala, who announced his commitment to Indiana football following his visit on January 24th.
On January 27th, the Georgia native verbally decided on Indiana over 18 other teams from which he earned offers, including Indiana, Arizona, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Minnesota, Mississippi State, Purdue, Rutgers, South Alabama, Syracuse, Troy, Central Florida, UCLA, Virginia and Wake Forest.
The Archer High School standout comes in at No. 45 in the nation at the weak defensive end position, according to 247Sports rankings. Mayala is ranked 85th-best recruit in the state of Georgia, and No. 944 nationally in the 2020 class.
Standing at 6’6”, Mayala is the lengthiest of the Hoosiers’ now 11-strong defensive end group. That being said, he is also amongst the slimmest. Weighing in at 218 pounds, Mayala’s potential impact lies heavily in the hands of Indiana strength and conditioning staff, Dr. Matt Rhea and David Ballou.
