The Hoosier Huddle position preview continues with the defensive backs room. The defensive backs are one of the most experienced rooms for Tom Allen’s Hoosiers. With Tiawan Mullen, Noah Pierre, Jaylin Williams and others returning to the Hoosiers, the safety net of the defense will look to be one of the strongest position groups for the Hoosiers. Mullen was hurt for most of last season following a great 2020 campaign. The DBs will look to recreate the turnover success this season as the Hoosiers bounce back from a 2021 season that was not what the Hoosiers were expecting.

Among the promise of Indiana University football’s defense this year, lies a very important group of hybrid DBs. The Husky position is a hybrid safety and linebacker. Perhaps a bigger, harder hitting safety, or a quicker more agile linebacker. Both apply, and Indiana has some serious talent at the position.

Devon Matthews, who goes by the nickname ‘Monster’, could have decided to test the NFL waters after the 2021 season and nobody would have blamed him. The Hoosiers just ended a 2-10 season and he has had a very solid career at IU. However, to the delight of his coaches and the IU fans, Matthews decided to return to Bloomington for one final go-a-round for one reason.

The primary job of the coaching staff in any sport is to put their players into the best position possible to succeed. Spring practice is underway and defensive coordinator Kane Wommack and Indiana’s coaching staff have carried out that foremost responsibility by switching the positions of a few players. Raheem Layne has been moved from cornerback to safety, Bryant Fitzgerald has moved from safety to Husky, Josh Sanguinetti has moved from safety to cornerback and Jamar Johnson has switched from Husky to safety.
