We’re now just a stones throw away from opening day and the spots in our countdown are getting a little closer to single digits. Today we tackle a pair of players who share the same digits and share a similar status at their respective positions. One will be looking for time in a talented secondary, the other will be looking to carve out a larger role for himself in a running back room that recently lost it’s starter in Camion Patrick. Let’s dive into Jameel Cook Jr. and Cole Gest.

Numbers that Matter: Season Opening Showdown in South Beach

For all intents and purposes, the 2015 season was a successful one for the Hoosiers, despite dropping their postseason matchup with the Duke Blue Devils. However, the successes and disappointments of last year are in the rearview mirror and a world of endless possibilities are set before them. Indiana enters the fall with one of its most talented rosters to date. And while there are some question marks surrounding some very key positions, this group has enough weapons in place to help foster along the growth of these fresh faces looking to make an impact.

2016 Defensive Backs Preview: There's Depth And Talent, But Will Results Come?

2016 Defensive Backs Preview: There's Depth And Talent, But Will Results Come?

Indiana's pass defense was atrocious last season, ranking next to last in the nation giving up 313.8 yards per game. Despite the extremely low ranking, Indiana did manage to do some things decently, and showed that they have some talent in the secondary. The Hoosiers picked off 12 passes which ranked as a tie for 56th nationally. This season the entire secondary returns, most of them healthy and ready to play in 2016. On paper this may be the deepest and the most raw talent the Hoosiers have had in the secondary, probably ever, but can they turn names on paper into results on the field? The answer to that question is probably the difference between another bowl game, possibly seven or eight wins, and spending the holidays at home.

2015 Indiana Hoosier Football Season Rewind

2015 Indiana Hoosier Football Season Rewind

It has been three-plus weeks since the Hoosiers walked off the field at Ross-Ade Stadium with a third straight bronze "I" to link to the chain on the Old Oaken Bucket and a bowl bid to fulfill. Now we know the Hoosiers next game will be on Dec. 26th at the New Yankee Stadium (Yes, it is still New Yankee Stadium) in the Pinstripe Bowl against the Duke Blue Devils from the Atlantic Coast Conference. So, let's refresh how the Hoosiers actually ended up playing in a bowl in what looks to be a balmy 60-degree New York City.

Game Wrap and Reaction: Indiana 36 Florida International 22

Opponent: Florida International Golden Panthers

LocationSaturday September  12th   /8:12pm/ Memorial Stadium/ (Bloomington, IN

Why They Played:  Indiana paid $1 million dollars to get this game switched to FIU from USF in order to bolster the number of home games IU was playing. Wilson did not want to play just six home games again.

What The Game Meant

Indiana had to play improved football on defense to win the game and start a season 2-0 for the first time since 2012. A loss here would probably doom the season after last week’s performance against Southern Illinois.

Countdown to Kickoff: 20 Days (Jameel Cook Jr.)

Written By: Nick Holmes (@HoosierHolmes)

It goes without saying that the Hoosiers are in dire need of playmakers in the secondary, and if the past few years has showed us anything, Coach Wilson does not shy away from throwing a true freshman out on the gridiron if he believes he can make a difference. Recent history also shows us that gamble has paid off for Wilson. With only 20 days left in our countdown, we take a look at a true freshman who will certainly be in the mix at safety this fall, Jameel Cook Jr.

What Does Allen's Suspension Mean for IU's Defense?

What Does Allen's Suspension Mean for IU's Defense?

What does Allen’s Suspension mean for IU’s defense?

Antonio Allen has been suspended indefinitely and his football career at IU is most likely over after being arrested on felony drug charges. The junior was expected to start at safety and help anchor a defense that was hoping to continue the improvements they made during the 2014 season. Without him, IU’s secondary now looks extremely young (only two players have made any career starts, Chase Dutra with 1 and Kenny Mullen with 7) and a group that was already looking suspect will now have even more questions to answer.
