What does Allen’s Suspension mean for IU’s defense?

Antonio Allen has been suspended indefinitely and his football career at IU is most likely over after being arrested on felony drug charges. The junior was expected to start at safety and help anchor a defense that was hoping to continue the improvements they made during the 2014 season. Without him, IU’s secondary now looks extremely young (only two players have made any career starts, Chase Dutra with 1 and Kenny Mullen with 7) and a group that was already looking suspect will now have even more questions to answer.

Safety Antonio Allen Arrested on Felony Drug Charges, Dismissed from Team

With the season just 80 days away, this is becoming a dreadful offseason off the field for the Indiana Hoosiers, as we have learned that safety Antonio Allen is being held on $75,000 bail on felony charges of dealing methamphetamine, cocaine, and heroine, in a Monroe County jail. Jeff Rabjohns of Peegs.com first reported this news. Indiana University released a statement earlier stating that they, “and the IU football program are aware of the arrest of junior defensive back Antonio Allen. Allen has been suspended from all football activities effective immediately. We will continue to gather facts, monitor the legal process, and take further action as the evolving situation warrants.”

Indiana's Tevin Coleman Named 1st Team All-Big Ten

Tevin Coleman's historic season was good enough to be named first team All-Big Ten by the media and coaches

Tevin Coleman's historic season was good enough to be named first team All-Big Ten by the media and coaches

On Monday night the Hoosiers’ Tevin Coleman was honored as one of two running backs named first team All-Big Ten. Coleman, who became the 18th rusher in FBS history to reach the 2,000-yard mark in the season finale Saturday, joins Wisconsin’s Melvin Gordon as the top running back in the conference.

Coleman, a junior, had the best season ever by an Indiana University running back. He set the school record for rushing yards in a single season with 2,036 on 270 carries. That is a mind blowing 7.5 yards per carry. Coleman also scored 15 touchdowns. What may be even more impressive is that he put up these numbers while the Hoosiers did not have much of a passing game after the sixth game of the season. For his career Coleman has 3,219 yards rushing and 28 touchdowns. Coleman is also a finalist for the Doak Walker Award given to the nation's top running back.

Several other Hoosiers garnered conference awards as senior safety Mark Murphy was named the Big Ten’s Sportsmanship award winner while safety Antonio Allen, offensive linemen Dan Feeney, Colin Rahrig, and Jason Spriggs, as well as wide receiver Shane Wynn and defensive lineman Bobby Richardson all received Big Ten Honorable Mentions.

The Indiana Hoosiers are coming off an impressive defensive performance, where they held a high-powered Missouri offense that was averaging nearly 42 points per game to just 27 points. They were aggressive and energetic in an effort that saw the unit rack up 11 tackles for loss. Saturday’s matchup pits the IU defense against an offense that is very similar to Missouri. So sit back, relax and enjoy the three keys to victory for the Hoosiers on defense.

2014 Preview: Defensive Backs

2014 Preview: Defensive Backs

In today’s College football it is important for a great defense to have a great defensive backfield. The 2013 Indiana Defense was led by returning defensive standouts Mike Hunter and Tim Bennett in the defensive backfield. With a stacked defensive line, the DB’s should have plenty of opportunity to make plays in 2014. With that said, the Hoosiers had a less than consistent defense last year.  Let’s take a look at some specific strengths and weaknesses of the individual players.
