There are now 20 days remaining until the Indiana Hoosiers kick-off the 2016 season in Miami against the Florida International Golden Panthers. Join us each day for each part of our 100-day countdown to the opener! Current IU player, Jameel Cook Jr., wears #20.
Jameel Cook Jr. (Sophomore)
-Height: 6’1”
-Weight: 201 pounds
-Hometown: Missouri City, TX
-Position: Defensive Back
One of the true freshmen that played last year, Jameel Cook Jr. had an immediate impact on the Indiana team. He recorded sixteen tackles, 11 solo, one pass breakup, and a 96-yard interception return for a touchdown. The pick-six sealed the Hoosiers win over FIU and was the longest interception return in the Big Ten last season and tied for the fourth longest in Indiana program history. He appeared in eight games as the team’s nickel back before suffering a season ending injury.
Moving into this season, Cook will be coming off of his injury but don’t expect that to hinder his progression. Cook will still be in the mix of defensive backs, most likely at his original spot as nickel back. With the increase in secondary positions and decrease of linebackers with Coach Allen’s 4-2-5 defensive scheme, there will be a switch up of players and positions, including the opportunity for a full-time nickel back. Cook earned his spot last year so as long as he proves he’s healthy and continually improving, he’s got an even better shot at major playing time this season.
