Jonathan Crawford was a Staple on Defense, Now it's up to "Everybody in the Room" to Replace Him

Jonathan Crawford was a Staple on Defense, Now it's up to "Everybody in the Room" to Replace Him

Written by Nathan Comp

When the Indiana defense peers into its 2019 defensive secondary, a significant hole will be visible. That hole is named Jonathan Crawford.

275 tackles, 182 solo, 9 interceptions, 19 total takeaways. Just the 12th player in Big Ten history to start 50 games, every game in his career. Crawford has truly been a staple of the Indiana defense the past four years. He is now moved on to tackling the goal of making an NFL roster, and for the 2019 Hoosiers, this leaves the task of replacing his production.

Spring Preview- The Hoosier Secondary Has the Talent, Now They Need Efficiency

Spring Preview- The Hoosier Secondary Has the Talent, Now They Need Efficiency

Written by Evan McShane (@veryreasonable)

While the efficiency numbers were not great, the Indiana defense boasted a respectable secondary in 2019. The Hoosiers thrived off of creating turnovers. Indiana tied for 33rd in the country with 13 team interceptions and they tied for fifth in the country in fumble recoveries with 13. With the departure of Hoosier safety Jonathan Crawford, Indiana has big shoes to fill. Luckily, there are a number of players capable of stepping up to the plate. IU's secondary will still be young next fall, but they will have the luxury of depth. Heading into spring, the IU defensive backs appears to be one of the most talented position groups on the roster. Indiana will return several starters from last year, and Tom Allen and his staff have recruited cornerbacks and safeties very well the past few years. While it is yet to be seen which individuals will produce most, the secondary will be among Indiana's strongest units in 2019.

2016 Defensive Backs Preview: There's Depth And Talent, But Will Results Come?

2016 Defensive Backs Preview: There's Depth And Talent, But Will Results Come?

Indiana's pass defense was atrocious last season, ranking next to last in the nation giving up 313.8 yards per game. Despite the extremely low ranking, Indiana did manage to do some things decently, and showed that they have some talent in the secondary. The Hoosiers picked off 12 passes which ranked as a tie for 56th nationally. This season the entire secondary returns, most of them healthy and ready to play in 2016. On paper this may be the deepest and the most raw talent the Hoosiers have had in the secondary, probably ever, but can they turn names on paper into results on the field? The answer to that question is probably the difference between another bowl game, possibly seven or eight wins, and spending the holidays at home.
