Hoosier fans should know what the Old Brass Spittoon is now, since it is comfortably back in Bloomington for the first time since 2006. The Spartans and Hoosiers renew their trophy game and try and build a rivalry as the series continues in East Lansing on October 21st. This is a game where a win could swing the Hoosiers' season from good to great. Michigan State is dealing with a lot of turmoil both on and off the field as they try and recover from a 3-9 season and a sexual assault scandal that left several key players dismissed from the team. It's been 16 years since the Hoosiers have won in Spartan Stadium, but 2017 could put an end to that streak.

We have sped through September, and all the way to the second Saturday in October. The Hoosiers’ open week in October 7th, after a clash with Penn State and prior to hosting Michigan and it comes almost right smack in the middle of the season. Coming off of an open date isn’t necessarily a great thing. Yes, it let’s players get healthy and back in the lineup (hopefully that won’t be too necessary for IU), however teams usually come out a little bit rusty, especially on offense. IU hasn’t won a game coming off an open week since 2013 when they knocked off Penn State 44-24. They lost to Wake Forest in 2016, Iowa in 2015, and in an odd double open week season in 2014 IU dropped games to Bowling Green and Michigan.

Indiana heads to Happy Valley in week five to face the defending Big Ten Champs, the Penn State Nittany Lions. IU has beaten Penn State just once in their history, a 44-24 win in Bloomington in 2013. The Nittany Lions return the best quarterback-running back combination in the Big Ten, a pretty good tight end as well as some playmakers on defense. This will be Penn State’s homecoming game and they’ll be sporting their retro jerseys. The Big Ten East is really rough, but this may be the toughest game on IU’s schedule in 2017.
