Week Thirteen Preview: Michigan Wolverines
The penultimate game of the 2019 regular season sees the Indiana Hoosiers host the Michigan Wolverines. IU has been oh so close to finally knocking off Michigan in the recent past but they have not actually beaten the Maize and Blue since 1987 (a 14-10 triumph in Bloomington). The Wolverines have won 22 in a row in the series. This game comes right before gigantic rivalry games for both schools and it’s impossible to tell what all will be on the line for either side when November 23 rolls around.

The archaic method of using two-a-days to get players in shape was legislated out of existence this April. The NCAA revealed a rule eliminating multiple contact practices per day during the preseason. The rule change was almost immediately adopted by Division II and Division III. Specifically, the new regulation states:
"A single day may include a single, three-hour, on-field practice session and a walk-through. During walk-throughs, protective equipment such as helmets and pads can’t be worn, and contact is prohibited. Walk-throughs also can’t include conditioning activities and, in the Football Championship Subdivision, are limited to two hours in length. Three continuous hours of recovery are required between on-field practice and a walk-through. Activities such as meetings, film review, medical treatment and meals are allowed during recovery time."

We have sped through September, and all the way to the second Saturday in October. The Hoosiers’ open week in October 7th, after a clash with Penn State and prior to hosting Michigan and it comes almost right smack in the middle of the season. Coming off of an open date isn’t necessarily a great thing. Yes, it let’s players get healthy and back in the lineup (hopefully that won’t be too necessary for IU), however teams usually come out a little bit rusty, especially on offense. IU hasn’t won a game coming off an open week since 2013 when they knocked off Penn State 44-24. They lost to Wake Forest in 2016, Iowa in 2015, and in an odd double open week season in 2014 IU dropped games to Bowling Green and Michigan.
