How Indiana's 2018 Opponents' Rushing Attacks Stack Up

How Indiana's 2018 Opponents' Rushing Attacks Stack Up

Written by: TJ Inman (@TJHoosierHuddle)

Any list or ranking done by a human is bound to be somewhat subjective. While I may have a strong opinion about one player being better than another, many of the players (and groups of players) on this list have very little to separate them from the man placed a spot higher or lower than they are. There are also many factors that greatly impact the way we perceive a player. Things like offensive line, offensive system and the quality of the skill position players around him are all critical factors that matter greatly to how successful the individual can be. That’s why football is often considered the ultimate team sport. Taking those things into consideration, one of our regular offseason features at the Hoosier Huddle is to rank Indiana’s opponents by each critical position group. Keep in mind, I am ranking the running back group as a whole, not just one individual running back (in reality, the offensive lines are inherently considered as well). This is my list and these are my opinions, we’d love to hear what you think so please share your thoughts in the comments section!

As Good As the Passing Game Is, IU Needs to Run The Ball

As Good As the Passing Game Is, IU Needs to Run The Ball

The Hoosiers enter their open week at 4-4, winless in the conference, and riding a four-game losing streak. Indiana will have to go at least 2-2 over the last third of the season to reach that elusive six-win mark. The Hoosiers started the 2015 campaign with an extremely promising 4-0 start. Part of that success was due in part to the stellar play of quarterback Nate Sudfeld and the passing attack. However, if you go inside the numbers a little closer you can see the difference in the four game win streak and the four game losing streak is how the Hoosiers run the ball and control the clock.

During the game between Indiana and Florida International Saturday night the head official was arguing a non-call on an offsides play with Hoosier head coach Kevin Wilson when he dropped the four-letter word while he still had is microphone on. The word was heard throughout the stadium and in the press box, but was cut out on the TV broadcast.

On Monday Wilson pointed out at his weekly press conference that "our administration yesterday got notification from the referee that they had made a blunder during the game and apologized for that. We moved on from that, but I do need to say that because we got recruits, parents; I got my daughter asking me, why I would say something, which was not said. We didn't take a time-out to argue a call. We were letting the clock run down, trying to get them a jump offsides, thought they did. Take a time-out and kick a field goal. So there's no issue with missed calls. It's part of the game."

Why They Played:  Indiana paid $1 million dollars to get this game switched to FIU from USF in order to bolster the number of home games IU was playing. Wilson did not want to play just six home games again.

What The Game Meant

Indiana had to play improved football on defense to win the game and start a season 2-0 for the first time since 2012. A loss here would probably doom the season after last week’s performance against Southern Illinois.

Week 2: Florida International Panthers

As you read last week, the Indiana Hoosiers will open the 2015 season by hosting the Southern Illinois Salukis. This week, our preview rolls on and takes a look at IU’s week 2 opponent, the Florida International Panthers. FIU is a member of Conference USA and will come into this contest after opening their season at Central Florida. These first two games are contests that IU absolutely has to have in order to achieve their paramount goal of six wins and a postseason berth. FIU isn’t a juggernaut by any means but they will be a step up in competition from the opening week opponent and the Hoosiers will need to play a solid contest to feel comfortable about the outcome.

Indiana Announce Home-and-Home Series with FIU in 2017 and 2018

The Indiana Hoosiers begin a series with the Florida International Golden Panthers on September 12 in Bloomington. That game was expected to be the first of two between the two schools (with IU traveling to FIU in 2016). However, Indiana has announced that the series will continue into 2017 and 2018 with an additional “home-and-home” tacked on to the original agreement.

Hoosiers Drop South Florida, Add Home-and-Home With FIU

Fred Glass may have finally wised up about scheduling for Indiana football.  After getting burned in 2013 by a very difficult non-conference schedule, which included three bowl teams, Glass cancelled the upcoming series with South Florida and traded it for a home-and-home with Florida International in 2015 and 2016.  The move gives IU seven home games for the 2015 season.  The Golden Panthers are a team that has won just four games in the last two years.
