BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana sophomore cornerback Tiawan Mullen has earned a spot on the watch list for the 26th annual Chuck Bednarik Award, presented annually to the outstanding defensive player in college football. The Maxwell Football Club announced the honorees today and Mullen is one of just 11 sophomores on the list.

The Indiana Hoosiers secondary returns young, experienced talent in 2020 and the expectations for the unit are sky high. The Hoosiers went through some growing pains in the secondary in 2019 as they ranked 10th in the Big Ten in yards per game allowed (213.7). So Indiana has still has work to do on a unit that returns Tiawan Mullen, Reese Taylor, Raheem Layne and Jaylin Williams among others. The Hoosiers need to find more defining plays in the secondary.

Indiana University cornerbacks coach Brandon Shelby spoke to the media this week via Zoom as the Indiana Hoosiers staff continues to work with players remotely and prepare for the upcoming season. Shelby is entering his 10th season with the program and he loves where his position group is at heading into the summer.

“We surely have a great foundation,” Shelby said of the cornerback group. “I’m very, very satisfied with where we are going to start come the fall.”

Tiawan Mullen, by all accounts, had a stellar 2019 season.

His 13 pass breakups led the Big Ten and shared 11th nationally. He shared the team lead in fumbles forced and fumbles recovered. The Athletic, 247Sports, Pro Football Focus, and the Big Ten Conference all included Mullen in their All-American and All-Conference teams. And all these accomplishments came in his true freshman campaign.
