On a semi-un-related note. I may have told this story before, but my wife works for a company that builds software that monitors complaints. The software typically logs the call, catalogs the callers information, and often will send a coupon out to that address to help calm the complainer down. Cheesecake Factory is one of the clients for this software.
Some guy figured out how to game the system ala Laslo from Real Genius and his computer filling out the frito-lay sweepstakes entries. This guy programmed his computer to make hundreds of complaints to the system about the Cheesecake Factory and ended up getting thousands of dollars worth of coupons for free cheesecake.
They finally figured out how to change the system so that a receipt had to be provided with each complaint, but somewhere out there, somebody is enjoying all the pumpkin pecan cheesecake that they can stuff down their gullet.

Typical campaign sloganeering and pandering ala "chicken in every pot". Whether it's the promise of a check, free healthcare, increased or new entitlements or tax cuts it's buying your vote. It's gross but this is nothing new and in practice commonly on both sides.

First, our election system is a fundamental underpinning of American democracy. Trump's proposal makes a disgusting mockery of that system.
Next, it's a "dividend" on what? Our staggering national debt?
The "plan," which of course is bullshit (more on that later), would cost $1.3 TRILLION. Where's that coming from? Under the Constitution, only Congress can approve government spending.
Trump insisted that the money must be spent in the US. There would be absolutely no practical way to monitor that.
Trump promised checks to Americans from the DOGE "savings." Of course, that never happened. He promised checks from his tariff revenues. That was another empty promise. So is this. But there are millions of people for whom 5k is a lot of money, and millions of low IQ individuals who will believe this latest Trump bullshit, and they'll vote because of it.
Can't wait to combine this with the DOGE and tariff relief checks that will surely come any day now to buy something nice for my kids and parents.
In all seriousness, I think this is the kind of thing that will piss off a good chunk of his base. As you mentioned, $5,000 is a lot of money to a lot of people. If they start coming up with ways to spend this and it never comes - or they overcommit thinking this check will show up, a lot of people will be really pissed off. And let's be real - these checks aren't ever coming, even if Republicans sweep the midterms.

Plus, in 2 years, we will have a bunch of new scandals to argue about and will forget all about the $5000 empty promise...just like most aren't talking about mexico paying for the wall anymore.

These are all good points, but I think the one thing he absolutely cares about is any amount the Democrats can hold his feet to the fire and keep him from doing all the stupid crap he's trying to do. Even if they can stop him from keeping his name off things in and around DC that's a big deal to him.
