Does someone really have to explain that there is a difference between

"I will do this for you, if you elect me to office"

and

"I will do this for you if you vote, overall, the 'right way' in hundreds of elections, none of which involve me at all"??

Typical campaign sloganeering and pandering ala "chicken in every pot". Whether it's the promise of a check, free healthcare, increased or new entitlements or tax cuts it's buying your vote. It's gross but this is nothing new and in practice commonly on both sides.

No.  This proposal by the president of the United States isn't "typical" at all.

First, our election system is a fundamental underpinning of American democracy.  Trump's proposal makes a disgusting mockery of that system.

Next, it's a "dividend" on what?  Our staggering national debt?

The "plan," which of course is bullshit (more on that later), would cost $1.3 TRILLION.  Where's that coming from?  Under the Constitution, only  Congress can approve government spending.

Trump insisted that the money must be spent in the US.  There would be absolutely no practical way to monitor that.

Trump promised checks to Americans from the DOGE "savings." Of course, that never happened.  He promised checks from his tariff revenues.  That was another empty promise.  So is this.  But there are millions of people for whom 5k is a lot of money, and millions of low IQ individuals who will believe this latest Trump bullshit, and they'll vote because of it.

His shit-stain just keeps spreading.

Trump says every adult American will get $5,000 if Republicans win midterms

Can't wait to combine this with the DOGE and tariff relief checks that will surely come any day now to buy something nice for my kids and parents.

In all seriousness, I think this is the kind of thing that will piss off a good chunk of his base. As you mentioned, $5,000 is a lot of money to a lot of people. If they start coming up with ways to spend this and it never comes - or they overcommit thinking this check will show up, a lot of people will be really pissed off. And let's be real - these checks aren't ever coming, even if Republicans sweep the midterms.

You're correct again.  You're really on a roll today. The norm is vote for me and I'll either take money from productive citizens or print it to pay for old people, immigrants, wars, or poor people.   Trump said f#ck it, vote for me and I'll give you all money.  I think you define that as being inclusive.  You should liberals should love it.

There is a substantial difference between "vote for me for single payer as works in every other G20 nation, is cheaper with better outcomes" and "vote for me, here is $5000".

Yeah, the substantial difference is that the promise of subsidized healthcare actually bought enough votes for that boondoggle to come to fruition. And instead of reducing the deficit as was promised, has added a few trillion to it and as a recurring annual expense will continue to do so.

As to Trump he didn't ask anyone to vote for him. He promised to pay the dividend if the Republicans retain their congressional majorities, which of course would be requisite to having the support in getting that type of plan passed.

I think I'll take all my dividends, and use the money on a down payment for a loaf of bread.

@ohio-guy This is a pathetic, desperation move by Trump.  All signs, particularly lately, have been pointing to a Dem landslide in November, so this is daddy dearest coming to the rescue in a last-ditch effort to salvage things for the party but, more importantly, for himself.  He can't entertain the prospect of losing his ironclad grip on the federal government.  If that were to happen, he'd immediately not only lose power and influence, but he'd be a focus of corruption investigations.

Trump can't lose with his bullshit 5k proposal.  If the Dems roll in November, it'll be perceived as nothing ventured, nothing gained, and there's no unfilled promise regarding the payments.   If, on the other hand, the bullshit 5k offer has the intended effect and Pubs prevail, his low IQ followers will be pissed when they don't get the 5k but, at that point, Trump won't give a shit.  He'll continue to be unchallenged, unaccountable and untouchable.  He'll just play golf, keep making billions off the presidency, and engage in endless and sickening self-aggrandizement until January 20, 2029 when he retires (finally) to Mar-A-Lago.

He's turned the American presidency into a three-ring circus and a vehicle for self-dealing and personal enrichment.  How far we have fallen.

If he pushes on regardless though, this is absolutely something that would qualify as an impeachable offense.

he's buying a jury to prevent that

Obama phones, Mamdani's "free" grocery stores, "free" daycare,  etc.  Dems are masters at giving away "free" stuff.

Everyone's opinions are noted.  Now let's get to the more important question.  What is everyone doing with their 5k Trump check?  @bradstevens let me guess some new penny loafers or books?   @larsiu a frisbee or three?  @bar-down I assume a PCA jersey?  Sorry, but it's a secret what I am going to buy.
