"The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade."

Any chance our do-nothing Congress finally does something to regulate AI before it's too late?  Not likely.

And getting the rest of the world (particularly China) on board is an even bigger hurdle.

Lawmakers sound alarm on AI dangers after Anthropic researchers' warning

Maybe Terminator will be considered sort of a documentary in the future much like Idiocracy already is . . .

@big-ryan You should get offline & hide in a bunker somewhere…

China, North Korea, Iran, Russia, etc will not be responsible.  Our best chance of survival is to remain at the forefront & hope to develop some safeguards.

The last thing we need is for Congress to meddle in AI. AI lacks human consciousness and independence.  The only way AI can pose a danger is through human malevolence.  That is the same danger government poses.

That is incorrect. Ask AI itself how it can destroy humanity, it will tell you many ways. Many do not involve "human malevolence." Unclear parameters, sloppy programming, etc, are huge risks.

"At the forefront" of what?

And "hope" to develop safeguards?  Brilliant strategy!

You are woefully uninformed on this issue.

If only there were an AI thread or ten to post about this (where this has already been discussed).

The US Congress isn’t going to stop AI development any more than it can stop gain of function research in the world. And the reason has as much to do with the structure and incentives in our system as it does the individuals involved.

Nuclear weapons meet the same description.

AI research.

“Woefully uninformed,” indeed.

@bradstevens Nice try with one of your frequent "gotcha" attempts, but I'm not disputing our leading role in AI research.  We need to take the lead in implementing AI safeguards.  To date, the US has prioritized rapid innovation and private-sector growth over federal regulation.

And sorry if there are other threads on this topic.  My posting frequency and time spent here is a fraction of yours.  I read only a small percentage of what's posted here.  In any event, this (the dire warning from the Anthropic researcher) was breaking news yesterday with widespread media coverage.

What's your deal?

It's noise to try and gin up fear to get the Nancies to vote for regulations.  And Butch is correct on it coming inside the house.  Large companies love regulations and a couple of them want to write the rules to keep out the competition.

On one hand, look at congress

The same people that can't open an email aren't going to do well regulating AI. It is like the beginning of the internet, a s security conference I was at discussed bizarre court rulings attributed to judges who had zero idea what the Internet was. One was, and this was recent at the time, the idea you or I could run out and buy coke.com.

On the other hand, on the billionaire side we undoubtedly have a lot of Stockton Rush's. He was the guy who wanted his Titanic submersible built his way, in a hurry, with almost no testing. The result was catastrophic.

There is no stopping this. Government intervention by the US would do nothing to stop China. It's an arms race now. The forces being unleashed will change humanity forever at Industrial Revolution scale but in 1/10th the time.

The question will be what happens to all these people.

And no, I'm not entirely comfortable with this being led by tech giants and funded largely by them and others interested in turning this technology into the greatest profit generator in history.

In every inconceivable way, this is "I clearly cannot trust the AI in front of you" with "I clearly cannot trust the AI in front of me."

Where I don't think Congress can effectively regulate it, there should be strict laws if AI escapes and does damage. We know it escaped the virtual containment, attacked, and took down a competitor's website. That is pretty minor, it could be the power grid. When this type of thing happens, everyone from the CEO to the programmers should face a legal proceeding. Not the System Admins though; they are always hard-working and worthy of highest praise.
