First, our election system is a fundamental underpinning of American democracy.  Trump's proposal makes a disgusting mockery of that system.

Next, it's a "dividend" on what?  Our staggering national debt?

The "plan," which of course is bullshit (more on that later), would cost $1.3 TRILLION.  Where's that coming from?  Under the Constitution, only  Congress can approve government spending.

Trump insisted that the money must be spent in the US.  There would be absolutely no practical way to monitor that.

Trump promised checks to Americans from the DOGE "savings." Of course, that never happened.  He promised checks from his tariff revenues.  That was another empty promise.  So is this.  But there are millions of people for whom 5k is a lot of money, and millions of low IQ individuals who will believe this latest Trump bullshit, and they'll vote because of it.

His shit-stain just keeps spreading.

Trump says every adult American will get $5,000 if Republicans win midterms

@big-ryan If you're not swindling, you're not trying.  He's certainly not a pioneer in swindling, especially in Washington.  But he might be the best that's ever lived at it.

First of all, the proposal by Trump is ridiculous. Second, you tax and spend progressives worrying about spending taxpayer dollars is comical.

Small correction to the other thread: When my wife told me about this earlier, she had said that the $5,000 would only go to those who actually voted for the Republicans, not "every American".  So my statement was wrong over there.

It is still buying votes and illegal as stated, but at least it doesn't fall into the pure quid pro quo that I implied.

"Let’s be honest, Trump isn’t going to lose any votes from his base because of this."

No, but if he does lose the midterms (likely), this is absolutely directly violating a federal law.

As the link above notes, this is buying votes with intent.  There is no way to sugarcoat that.  This is direct money to purchase votes the way that it was phrased.

Trump has skirted the line of criminal offenses as President this term, but this directly crosses a line of federal law that has a jail time associated with sentencing.

Trump wont lose any votes because of this, but it very well could be the start of impeachment proceedings.

If / when Democrats win Congress, I was not in favor of trying to impeach.  I personally believed that the best thing that Democrats could do would be to push bills that help people and force Trump to veto them.

Him pushing this would change that.  Trump often floats things out with statements like this to gauge pushback.  There might be enough people in his administration with a spine to push back on him that this is a line too far, and then we wont hear about it again.

If he pushes on regardless though, this is absolutely something that would qualify as an impeachable offense.

Just like republicans pretending to care about debt when a dem is in charge is comical.

The bigger issue here is literally trying to buy votes with taxpayer money.  Anyone that would support that shit is despicable, anti-American scum.

@squeakyclean Yeah, yeah... so was "find me 11,000 votes"...  If he does keep pushing it, and the Dems win, they should make fun of him for it, call it out as an impeachable offense, but get to work on solving issues that will help Americans.

@squeakyclean nothing will happen to Trump for saying it.  They'd change the language (assuming they had to) to make it legal.

@hurryinghoosiers nobody cares about the debt.  Not Democrats.  Not Republicans.  If they did they would cut entitlements, welfare, and the military yesterday. You get either Socialism or Populism.  And why should we run 2 trillion dollar deficits for just the Boomers, the military, and the poor on the backs of the rest of society?

Yeah, but he WAS impeached over that.

And his poll numbers / popularity has declined to the point where a couple senators in '28 might find themselves making some hard mental calculations as to which way to vote to keep themselves in office.

And to Snarl's point, give me an example of how they can change it to make it legal.  Not saying that there aren't ways (we are well outside of my wheelhouse, I admit), but from my understanding the way it has been initially framed makes it VERY easy to prosecute.
