State of the Room- IUFB Offensive Line

State of the Room- IUFB Offensive Line

The Indiana Hoosiers offense in 2021 was one of the worst units in the country. They were near the bottom in nearly every meaningful statistical category and while it is unfair and inaccurate to point the finger of blame at a single position group (in truth, every single unit outside of maybe tight end was poor), the offensive line was undoubtedly partially at fault. Heading into the season there was cautious optimism that things would be a little better than they had been in 2020 as multiple starters returned and a transfer from Michigan was brought in. It was quickly apparent though that the line had frustratingly and critically regressed. As things stand now, any improvement in the offensive line must come from within as no transfers have been added and position coach Darren Hiller is still in charge of the group.

2020 Position Preview – Offensive Line: Can the Hoosiers Line Push Through to the Next Level in 2020?

Historically, the offensive line for the Hoosiers have been… hit or miss depending on the season. Some great, some good, some really bad. That’s just how the cookie crumbles. When it comes to 2020’s offensive line, there still remains some questions. Partially due to the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic, the public hasn’t been able to see exactly what’s going on at fall camp. Usually, the media and therefore the public would have a pretty good idea of what’s going to be the starting lineup. This year is slightly different. Sure, the five, six, seven best offensive linemen are going to get a majority of the minutes. That’s a given.

Despite the announcement of a conference only fall schedule, there has not been an announced halt to the season yet. As they say in the Navy, ‘Damn the Torpedos, Full Speed Ahead’. The 2020 Hoosier Huddle Countdown is nearing the halfway point ad we are firmly at the point of the countdown that focuses on a string of the “big uglies” upfront: the offensive linemen. Today’s feature is a redshirt freshman the Hoosiers might be counting on to step into a starting role, Mike Katic.
