The Indiana football program held their annual awards banquet on Thursday night to commemorate the 2020 season in which the Hoosiers finished 12th in the AP Poll with a record of 6-2. Tom Allen gave out 19 awards to 26 different players. The ceremony was also highlighted by the inaugural Chris Beaty Award, an award given in honor of Chris Beaty, a former Hoosier football player who walked on to the team and was killed last summer trying to thwart a robbery. Charges Filed in Murder of Former IU Football Player Chris Beaty

Earlier this spring former Hoosier football player and Indianapolis entrepreneur Chris Beaty was shot and killed trying to break up a robbery outside of his apartment during the George Floyd protests in downtown Indianapolis. Marcus Allen was charged on Wednesday with murder, felony murder, robbery and pointing a firearm in his alleged role in the crime according to the Marion County prosecutor.

Tom Allen’s message is not a new one. In fact, the Indiana University head football coach has spoken about love, acceptance and compassion for one another since the day he took over as IU’s defensive coordinator more than five years ago. The nationwide protests and civil unrest following the brutal but all too familiar murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer have made Allen’s cry to love each other, or “LEO”, more urgent than ever. Allen was the first collegiate football coach publicly speak out in support of the protests. He did not do it to be first or to grab attention. He did it because he believes in the cause.

Former Hoosier Football Player Chris Beaty Killed in Indianapolis Over the Weekend

Chris Beaty, a former Indiana Hoosier football player and Cathedral High School standout was killed late Saturday night in Indianapolis from multiple gun shot wounds. Beaty was 38 years old and played for the Hoosiers from 2000-2004 and helped bring three state titles to Cathedral during his time as a student there from 1996-99. After football Beaty founded Fresh Marketing, LLC, an event promotion company and co-hosted the “Digital Universe” online talk show. Another young man, Dorian Murrell, was also killed over the weekend in the wee hours Sunday morning.
