The Indiana football program held their annual awards banquet on Thursday night to commemorate the 2020 season in which the Hoosiers finished 12th in the AP Poll with a record of 6-2. Tom Allen gave out 19 awards to 26 different players. The ceremony was also highlighted by the inaugural Chris Beaty Award, an award given in honor of Chris Beaty, a former Hoosier football player who walked on to the team and was killed last summer trying to thwart a robbery. The Hoosier Huddle Spring Practice Preview series continues as we take a look at Indiana’s special teams unit. It’s a unit that had some very strong parts as well as areas for improvement in 2020 and will have to replace punter Haydon Whitehead. The Hoosiers finished the year 25th in net field position rankings and fifth in field goal efficiency according to Footballoutsiders.com. However, the Hoosiers ranked 86th in kickoff return efficiency. The Hoosiers do have the majority of their special teamers back in 2021, so let’s take a look at the group heading into spring practice.

It was Kane Wommack’s defense that won the Old Brass Spittoon for Indiana who moves to 4-0 in East Lansing on Saturday. A common theme in 2020 is that takeaways have made the difference. The Hoosiers defense took the ball away from Michigan State’s offense four times and scored 17 of their 24 points from them. On the season Indiana has scored 51 points off of their opponent’s 12 turnovers. That’s 4.25 points per takeaway.
