The Indiana Hoosiers face off against the Purdue Boilermakers on Saturday for the annual Old Oaken Bucket game. This series resumes after being cancelled last season due to COVID issues inside both programs. The Hoosiers come into the game holding the Bucket, but with a 2-9 record while the Boilermakers come in with seven wins looking for their best regular season since 2007 and to reclaim the Bucket for the first time since 2018. The Indiana football program held their annual awards banquet on Thursday night to commemorate the 2020 season in which the Hoosiers finished 12th in the AP Poll with a record of 6-2. Tom Allen gave out 19 awards to 26 different players. The ceremony was also highlighted by the inaugural Chris Beaty Award, an award given in honor of Chris Beaty, a former Hoosier football player who walked on to the team and was killed last summer trying to thwart a robbery. “A football player has to be a football player, you have to learn to adjust in any type of way.” Indiana defensive back Reese Taylor said this morning in response to my question about adjusting to Charlton Warren’s defense. Warren takes over for Kane Wommack who left IU to become the head coach at South Alabama. While the nuances of the defense may change a little, the standard that Taylor is setting for the younger defensive backs hasn’t.

The Hoosier Huddle Spring Practice Preview series continues as we take a look at Indiana’s special teams unit. It’s a unit that had some very strong parts as well as areas for improvement in 2020 and will have to replace punter Haydon Whitehead. The Hoosiers finished the year 25th in net field position rankings and fifth in field goal efficiency according to Footballoutsiders.com. However, the Hoosiers ranked 86th in kickoff return efficiency. The Hoosiers do have the majority of their special teamers back in 2021, so let’s take a look at the group heading into spring practice.

The Indiana Hoosiers had a grand total of 27 sacks in the 13 games they played during the 2019 season. Head Coach Tom Allen and Defensive Coordinator Kane Wommack knew they needed to find ways to generate more pressure on the quarterback if their defense was going to play to its potential. They spent the offseason finding some creative ways to use their personnel to bring heat to the opposing quarterback.

It was Kane Wommack’s defense that won the Old Brass Spittoon for Indiana who moves to 4-0 in East Lansing on Saturday. A common theme in 2020 is that takeaways have made the difference. The Hoosiers defense took the ball away from Michigan State’s offense four times and scored 17 of their 24 points from them. On the season Indiana has scored 51 points off of their opponent’s 12 turnovers. That’s 4.25 points per takeaway.
