Hoosiers Focusing on Install, Technique and Execution as Spring Practice Begins in Bloomington

Written By Sammy Jacobs (@Hoosier_Huddle)

It may be March, but it felt like a gorgeous fall day in Bloomington this afternoon as the Hoosiers kicked off their spring practice on Saturday afternoon. This was the first of four practices before the Indiana players embark on spring break (IU will have 11 practices after spring break including the annual Spring Game on April 14th) and head coach Tom Allen has set his focus on three goals before the Hoosiers go on hiatus: Installing new concepts in all three phases, technique and execution.

Five Things to Pay Attention to as Indiana Starts Spring Football Practice on Saturday

Five Things to Pay Attention to as Indiana Starts Spring Football Practice on Saturday

Written By Dustin Schutte (@SchutteCFB)

Football is returning to Bloomington.

Indiana kicks off its spring practice on Saturday, as it prepares for the 2018 season following a 5-7 (2-7) campaign last fall, coming just one win shy of a third consecutive bowl appearance.

The Hoosiers lose a plethora of talent from its 2017 squad, primarily on the defensive side of the football. As head coach Tom Allen enters his second spring practice, he'll be coaching an IU team with a little more youth and inexperience than he's had in two seasons (one as defensive coordinator) with the program.

With offseason football right around the corner for the Hoosiers, here are five things to watch heading into spring practice.

Spring Practice 2018 Position Battle: Quarterback

Spring Practice 2018 Position Battle: Quarterback

Written by: Lauralys Shallow (@ShallowLauralys)

The heart of any offense is the quarterback. For the past two seasons, Richard Lagow has been the pulse of the IU offense. Lagow threw for a total of 4,400 yards and an average of 220 YDS/G during his time at IU. The 6’6 240 pound quarterback played in ten games last season, only missing action against Charleston Southern. In his 2017 campaign, Lagow threw 15 TD and 8 INT. Lagow graduated, but the Hoosiers have a plethora of talent coming in, and Peyton Ramsey saw a good amount of playing time last season.

IU finished sixth in scoring offense in the B1G, scoring 26.8 PPG. IU was also sixth in total offense with 3188 pass yards 25 pass TD and 1561 rush yards. Most impressively, IU was third in pass offense, completing 306/502 passes. The Hoosiers struggled with turnovers. IU’s 13 interceptions was the fourth most in the conference. With two true freshmen and a redshirt freshman likely assuming the role of quarterback, they will have to mature quickly and adjust to the system to limit turnovers.

Spring Practice 2018 Position Preview: Quarterback

Spring Practice 2018 Position Preview: Quarterback

Written By Alex Compton (@alexncompton)

After an up and down two seasons, Richard Lagow is gone, and IU has some serious questions at quarterback for this year. The Hoosiers finished third in the Big Ten in passing yards a year ago, despite some grumblings from the fans on not being effective through the air. Mike DeBord’s offense is predicated on safe throws with a few bombs mixed in, and that was unlike the offense IU fans had come to know over the last four or five years. This season’s quarterback room is incredibly young, and really up for grabs. There are a handful of walk-ons that are working hard in the QB room, but for the sake of this preview I’ll only focus on the top three guys for 2018.

IU may also still be looking to bring in a grad transfer at quarterback, but for now these are the guys the Hoosiers are working with for 2018. Young, but exciting overall.

Richard Lagow is the Clearcut Starter in 2017, but There's a Battle Brewing for the Backup Role

Written by Sammy Jacobs (@Hoosier_Huddle)

There has been a lot of noise surrounding the quarterback position at Indiana since the end of last season. However, there is no quarterback battle as the starting job is clearly in the hands and on the arm of senior Richard Lagow. However, there is a battle for who backs up the big Texan. Indiana is in a bit of a pickle concerning who starts the 2018 season under center.

2017 National Signing Day Profile: Nick Tronti

Nick Tronti, 6’2”, 210 pounds, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL (Ponte Vedra High School), ATH, 247Sports Composite Ranking: 3-star (82.50)

It is not often that “Mr.Football” in the talent-rich state of Florida gets overlooked but that’s exactly what happened to 6’2” quarterback Nick Tronti. Tronti was committed to Charlotte before being pursued by IU quarterbacks coach Shawn Watson. He was only a 2-star but Watson saw a lot that he liked and IU landed the quarterback they critically needed to get after his January 24 official visit. Tronti completed 217 of his 325 passes for 3,328 yards with a remarkable 34 touchdowns to only four interceptions. In addition, the dual-threat ran for 615 yards with 19 rushing touchdowns and he led Ponte Vedra High School to the state title game, a rarity for a school that typically struggles in football.

Hoosiers Land QB Nick Tronti, Winner of Mr. Football in Florida

With just eight days until National Signing Day Indiana has finally landed a quarterback for the 2017 recruiting class. Nick Tronti, from Ponte Vedra H.S. in Florida, was committed to Charlotte before he changed his mind and decided to take his talents to Bloomington. Troni is a six-foot-two, 210-pound dual-threat quarterback who will fit well into the offense that new coordinator Mike DeBord will run at IU. He is a 247Sports Composite two-star recruit, but his senior year stats are tremendous. His 53 total touchdown performance this past season earned him Florida's Mr. Football award. He threw for 3,328 yards and ran for another 650. IU offered him on January 5th and he picked up an offer from Arizona on January 20th.
