@drjb Unfortunately he made the right choice. We just haven’t been in a position to get these top guys yet. The Dusty May miss definitely stings the most to me.

At the very least he would have had to loudly pick UM over IU directly and answered a million questions about it, which would have put things to bed.

SO,, since IU hasnt been to an elite 8 or further in 25 years, why is getting to the S16 "lowering the bar"? - Seems to me that would be heading in the right direction no?The reverse is true also. People proclaiming BM as the savant of college basketball after a single season. He might be that. He might not. A single year is hardly a finished picture. He could be Bruce Pearl or he could be Linc Darner.I looked at a few other boards and the cope regarding Ben is just comical. He will never get any further than this. His style of play is boring. LOL we have not been to an elite 8 in 24 years but IU fans always find a way to try and spin another coach having success.
I am not but he has done what IU has not been able to do in 24 years so even if he never goes to another elite 8 its more than we have done in a quarter of a century. That is just a fact.

and that's what I was getting at earlier. Good coaches have egos they have confidence. This job doesn't scare the good ones.. if given proper control and cooperation etc. they have the balls to undertake it
What makes you say higher tourney chances than Purdue? This is the only iteration of BM basketball that I've observed, so maybe it will be different, but I actually see a team very similar to Purdue. Well coached. Good shooters. But lacking in the athleticism to win a national championship.McCollum isnt so good! He only just got into the tourney in his first season at Iowa. 🤣 Then flamed out in the final 8 . 😆 And he only curb stomped by 17 a not too good Indiana team, at Indiana. Should have been at least 25.
Sure, he will need to reload now, with Stirtz moving on. So maybe next year is not as good for them. But eventually he will have them rolling. Expecting a Purdue approach only with higher end tourney chances. Not that Purdue hasnt done reasonably well.
@gros-louis It will be interesting to see how BM builds his next few rosters, for sure. I've done quite a lot of "research" on the guy. He's succeeded with multiple styles. A few of his Natty teams were much faster paced, and higher scoring teams. I think what we saw this year was the culmination of him leveraging Bennett Sturtz strengths.
He talked about how he thinks building rosters at the lower levels will actually have been more difficult than what he'll see at Iowa. With his main point being how common it was to lose recruits at his D2 stop, last minute, to D1 programs... and have to adapt and evolve, and win with the best available talent. THAT experience, I would think, will suit him well in this day and age. But he will have to start bringing in some more "dudes". I bet he's a guy that always has a good handle on that balance... program guys + impactful NBA talent.

Yeah, I have nothing to base it on. Just a feel. I believe he will recruit well and people will be surprised by that. I doubt McCollum is going to let himself be handcuffed by lack of athleticism. Sounds like Iowa has been working hard on the NIL end also. But than again, so has Purdue.

Well, I don't think there's any doubt that the best coaching conference in the country has leveled up even more with the additions of Medved and McCollum. I'm just not yet convinced Iowa is going to start ripping off Top3 Big Ten finishes on the regular...or even top 5. But maybe they will.

Yep its been bad decision after bad decision. May and Ben are simply the two most recent bad decisions.
