We need to put this Dusty thing to bed. Even if Woody had been fired after Year 3, you really think DM would have chosen IU over Michigan? I don't care where's he from, that would have been a poor career decision.

A good coach wins, period. Everyone said IU football was a dead end job. Didn’t faze Cignetti. He knew he was good.

and that's what I was getting at earlier.  Good coaches have egos they have confidence.  This job doesn't scare the good ones.. if given proper control and cooperation etc.  they have the balls to undertake it

A big difference though is that the football job came with only upside. Historically the worst college football Division I program. Any improvement would have been celebrated. If we had won 8 or 10 games and had a bowl game we'd have been thrilled.

The basketball job is a different animal. There is a group of fans who remember conference and national championships and want a return to that. A new coach has that pressure and expectation from day one. You have fans deciding after two games that "he's not the guy." and calling for replacement before the first season is over. IDK about genuine risks to family but some level of harassment might come with that, certainly the legend that it happens is out there. Cignetti had no such concerns.

And make no mistake, Dusty can handle the expectations and pressure, but he has no interest in putting family in the middle of that potential nuclear reactor of negativity.  His decision to not consider Indiana isn't about HIM.

25 yrs of IU Basketball mismanagement

Mistake #1. Firing RMK

Mistake #2. Hiring Mike Davis

Mistake #3. Not cutting loose Crean when Brad Stevens was available

Mistake #4. Hiring Kelvin Sampson

Mistake #5. Not sweeping the Sampson mess under the rug

Mistake #6. Hiring Archie Miller

Mistake #7. Hiring Mike Woodson

Mistake #8. Not cutting loose Woodson when Dusty May was available

Mistake #9. Darian DeVries?? Time will tell but so far it does not look good

At least we have IUFB

Not hiring Pitino in 2001 has to be up there.

Michigan was a better job.

Someday maybe Indiana can rival it or outdo again.

Will it will not be long before the ones who remember national title will start dying so soon there will be zero expectations at all and making the tourney can be celebrated with open arms. So maybe at the point we can get a good coach who is not scared because fans expected more than just making the tourney

There is absolutely no way Pitino would have been hired with Myles Brand still at the helm. Or Adam Herbert for that matter (for different reasons)

That is why I laugh when some say we will eventually get it right. Get it right based on what? Its been 26 years of not getting it right.

A good lesson for the future: if you deliberately torpedo a national champion level program, it can take a generation to recover.

I don't think any coach out there is afraid of the Hoosier job 'expectations' . Or whether or not they will get resources to rival the big time programs.

We are just ass at coaching hires. Mainly due to no foresight, no planning ahead when it's clear a transition is coming.

I'm confident several of the hot newer names would've leapt on our job. Dolson just didn't identify them in time.

It's got to be DeVries. Let's hope he has the chops!

Cignetti himself set high expectations for the program because he is supremely confident in his abilities. And given how good Dusty has been at Michigan and assuming it would have been the same here, there would have been zero negativity toward him or his family.

Get a coaching hire correct and it will take care of itself.  I was all over DD before he coached a game. Because it was a bad hire.  That's the issue ... stop screwing up the hiring process..:

I'd pay good money to know who Dolson genuinely considered besides DD. Maybe the "big names" weren't realistic, but why not go after a guy like Byington? Or Schertz? There were better M-M/1st Year HM coaches available than DD, imo.
